We are saddened by the news of Nelson Stevens's passing this week. Known for powerful portraits of African Americans—as seen here in "Towards Identity" (1970)—he was a key figure in the Black Arts Movement and the Chicago-based African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA).
