Applying for Medicare is done through the Social Security Administration. You will want to apply for Medicare at the beginning of your Initial Enrollment Period, called your IEP, which is usually three months before the month of your 65th birthday. If you’re receiving Social Security Benefits (or railroad retirement benefits) at least four months before turning 65, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. If you want to sign up for any Medicare supplemental/Medigap plans, you'll have to do it on your own. You can apply for Medicare online or by calling Social Security or your local Social Security office. To learn more, go to aarp.org/medicare.
