OTD in 1875, the HMS Challenger crew discovered the deepest place on Earth: the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. At the time, the crew measured a depth of ~5 mi (8,184 m), but more advanced technologies today have uncovered depths of nearly 6.9 mi (11,000 m)!
