Be Kind to Yourself, You're Worth It!I never thought I was important enough to be kind to myself. During my younger years I suffered from an eating disorder, drug addiction, depression and abusive relationships. I was stuck in a downward spiral, drowning in my own self-loathing and fears. It took years of therapy to release myself from this self-destructive lifestyle. Now I’m nearing 49 and I’m slowly becoming the woman I am meant to be. “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Ralph Waldo Emerson We all want to be happy and live fulfilling lives. What most of us fail to understand is that happiness begins on the inside. Learning to love ourselves is the hardest aspect of healing. ☼Speak Well of Yourself Be mindful of how you talk to yourself. Are you belittling yourself or are you speaking words of encouragement to your inner soul? This seems to be difficult for many people, myself included. For instance, this morning I got up early to enjoy a cup of coffee and observe the wildlife. My mind soon drifted off and dark thoughts ensued. I began berating myself for being a failure…at everything. I was caught in a whirlwind of negativity. Eventually, something red and beautiful caught my eye outside. I spotted a little cardinal fluttering about searching for his breakfast. At that moment my inner voice shifted to one of hope and possibilities. I became present in the moment and mindful of my thoughts. I redirected my inner voice. Instead of saying that I’m a failure, I began telling myself that I am a survivor! Whenever you start talking down to yourself, change your directional thoughts into something positive. “Our self-respect tracks our choices. Every time we act in harmony with our authentic self and our heart, we earn our respect. It is that simple. Every choice matters.” David Coppersmith ☼ Surround Yourself with Good Vibes Do you align yourself with positive, supportive and encouraging people? Do you surround yourself with people who put your down and drain you of energy? Take a close look into your relationships. Does your spouse treat you like you’re insignificant and you don’t deserve respect? Does negativity constantly spew out of the mouth of your closest friend? It’s so important to situate yourself amongst people who will lift you up, instead of tearing you down. Nobody should have to live with people whose sole desire is make you feel worthless. You are a wonderful person with amazing potential! Seek out those who are positive and supportive. Eventually you’ll realize there is no room in your life for downers. “When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.” Jean Shinoda Bolen ☼ Find Your Joy I’ll leave you with one final thought. Incorporate something in your life that brings you joy. One of the things that has always brought me joy is writing. I’m not the best writer, but that doesn’t matter. I enjoy writing and sharing my ideas with others. It’s so important for your self-esteem to pursue a hobby that brings you happiness. Have you always wanted paint or learn how to play guitar?
