Brutus Broke Out and Steel Building InstallationMan, Sulcata tortoises are so naughty sometimes. We are tort-sitting Brutus while his owners are in the home buying process and he is really large. These reptiles have some of the best smelling abilities and it is simple. Brutus smells the females and other males on the property and just wants to let everyone know he is the new tort on the block. We also had one of the steel buildings installed. We chose to use Castillo Metal Works (352) 209-0927. The cost was the most affordable at about thirteen hundred dollars. The crew was awesome, fast, and professional. Plant Sale At The Crazy Plants Nursery June 11, 12, and 13We constructed a small greenhouse to grow food for the animal facility and it was not long before we realized plants were a great way to provide revenue that could help us grow. The Crazy Plants Nursery is located at 22919 County Road 44a, Eustis Florida, 33736. We are a small greenhouse that is open to the public on certain days that do change throughout the season. Please come out to support the 501c3 nonprofit exotic animal sanctuary and conservancy called Crazy Critters Inc. Our summer operating hours are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10-3. Please check out our Facebook page on days there is heavy rain in the forecast to ensure we are open because it is difficult to host guest in the agricultural environment of a nursery. We try to open on some Wednesday's and even Sunday's anytime we have chores caught up here at the animal facility. You will have to check our Facebook pages on those days to see if we are on that day as we never know until the day of or before. Here is our Google Map location so you can see where you are in comparison to us...https://g.page/CrazyPlants?share We are a SMALL nursery open to the PUBLIC! Since we are such a small nursery, we are happy to host you and your family. Regardless if it is your dog or child, we ask you to ensure they are always monitored. Often, children come in and touch the plants. Others allow their dogs to pee on our plants. This causes stress and damage to stock that we need to sell to raise money. Crazy Plants For Crazy Critters Plant Sale Fundraiser June 05, 2020Our stock is always changing. I think it is because we sell at near wholesale prices but I really know it is because we are supported by the best people who make time out of their days to take a drive to our location. It is unbelievable how many things we are able to accomplish because we have the greenhouse nursery's revenue. Now that we carry produce, we hope to increase that. With the increased revenue will be more organized days and operating hours. When we have the brown barn cleaned out, we will have a place to be while it is storming. But you guys, that does not mean we will still be that typical trusted company. We will occasionally have emergency rescues and other situations we will have to attend to. As this year has come and almost gone, we have worked ourselves into at least three days per week to be open and scheduling all the animal work we do around those days. Please continue to show us support and we promise we are going to create a place to be, even in the rain. We are raising funds for a project that will construct the second perimeter around the animal facility to comply with regulations so we can upgrade our permits with FWC to do rehabilitation and headstarting to release native species. It is a long road when you are following all of the rules and laws set forth by the government. But we are so happy to do this correctly and without any debt from loans. You will not just find succulent species because we carry lots of cactus, tropicals, and edible plants too. We are so excited to add fresh farm produce to our stock. This week we have... Just as the animals we protect, these plants are poached at great numbers. Added there are fewer insects to pollinate combined with the fact they face heavy habitat destruction. All of these reasons are why it is important to purchase from a nursery you can trust. One that ensures that the plants are not stolen from the wild and at the same time legally obtain rare protected species for cultivation. Because extinct is forever. 112,400 species Currently, there are more than 112,400 species on The IUCN Red List, with more than 30,000 species threatened with extinction, including 41% of amphibians, 34% of conifers, 33% of reef-building corals, 25% of mammals and 14% of birds. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Crazy Plants Nursery is a small greenhouse located at 22919 County Road 44a in Eustis, Florida. Feeding DEER to Monitors while Lizards and Iguanas EAT FruitSo many chores each day at a facility as large as Crazy Critters Inc. On this day, we noticed a problem with Fluffy the Argus Monitor when I went in to feed her some venison. As the day went on we fed some fruit to Davinchi the Mexican Spiny Tail iguana, Gora the Tegu Lizard, and the green iguana group led by Mr. Iggnacuios. I guess the heat is why all of the lizards are acting so hyper and aggressive this week. I almost got a bite!!! Multiple times! From multiple animals. Just the most unusual!!! But it is all just a food response added by the confusion of moving and revamping enclosures. Tortoise Eats Bone, Baby Red cheeked Mud Turtles, and More...Sometimes information is not so easy to find on the internet and when you find the information it is important to have multiple sources of information before making decisions. We created www.crazycrittersinc.com because we wanted to make plant and animal information easy to find and understand. It is always difficult knowing how to hatch a new species of animals. This is especially true with turtles. When it came to the Redcheecked Mud Turtle, we got even more nervous once we were told the species were maybe going to be added to Cites in the future. As our day went on, we got really busy with cleaning water bowls, raking out enclosures, and what we call poop patrol. The day even had a strange dog in our field biting our cows. We caught our day and you can see just a small piece of it in this video. WAIT till you see what our day ended with! You will NOT believe this! Talkin' Plant Fundraiser... The Why, When, and WhereWe can not thank you enough for the moral, spiritual, and financial support we have received this year. Because of support from the plant collecting, animal-loving, and local community that we have been able to raise over five thousand dollars towards the $12,000 we need to pay the fence contractor. Helping to drive our fundraising efforts, we ave recently upgraded our plant stock. We figure if we want to upgrade our permits with the state, then the plants would be the first place to start. ~ Adopt ~ Breed ~ Rescue ~ Transport ~ Rehabilitate ~ Crazy Critters Inc. was established to provide non-domestic, non-releasable animals with a safe and permanent home. The sanctuary has adopted animals including reptiles, birds, and assorted wildlife. Once brought to the facility, these exotic animals are housed in naturalistic settings. Allowing propagation that is used for conservation. Currently, this facility houses species of animals listed on CITES. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is an international treaty to prevent species from becoming endangered or extinct because of international trade. Adding, the Crazy Critters organization has produced offspring from species currently found on the IUCN's Red List. Established in 1964, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species. Crazy Critters Inc. is a self-funded organization that depends on the greenhouse nursery to pay for the cost of housing exotic animals. The facility grows and sells species of plants such as succulent and cactus to support the care of the animals. Many too are listed on the IUCN's Redlist. Update On Freddy, The Macaws, Snow Leopard Tortoises, and Our Greenhouse StockYou guys ask us all of the time how do we keep all of these turtles straight. First in this video we see some of the most beautiful Snow Leopard Tortoises. We wanted to purchase some but it is not in our budget any time soon. One day we hope to give Leo the Leopard Tortoise that resides here a friend but that is going to have to wait. After the baby tortoises, we get to see the macaws before treating some aquatic turtles for shell fungus. Well, I can hardly tell who Freddy is in this video. Keep in mind that I do not see well combined with the fact there are more than a half dozen turtles that all look just alike. Freddy came here with a fungus on her shell. But with that fungus almost gone, identification is difficult. With that said, she has moved to the back porch where we keep turtles in quarantine for some time and while there we had to clean her pond out. The way we install bulk-heads makes taking care of aquatic turtles so much easier and it does not take too long at all. Before ending the video, we check out the plant stock in the greenhouse for this week’s plant sale fundraiser. We realize the audio sucks but our day has been very busy. Events that include a brand new species hatching in the incubator, Ken catching tortoise eggs while being laid by a Yellowfoot Tortoise, a long list of chores that includes alot of picking up of poop, and a wonderfully busy day at the greenhouse nursery. We promise to to use all of that equipment we have been working on to produce better quality but for now… life can be so CRAZY! ~ Adopt ~ Breed ~ Rescue ~ Transport ~ Rehabilitate ~ Crazy Critters Inc. was established to provide non-domestic, non-releasable animals with a safe and permanent home. Animals eating. PART II... Fluffy the Argus Monitor and other TortoisesYesterday we fed Gora the Tegu some eggs mixed with fish and Mazuri diet. We tried to feed Wrath the Savannah but he did not want to eat. But that is okay because he just ate about a dozen full-grown discoid bugs which are better for his diet. We stop in to say hi to Jo-Jo the Crow and the iguanas before ending up in the Orange Area to feed the rest of our mixture to them. Many people would be shocked to learn that tortoises eat eggs another mind fish. Animals eating fish eggs and Mazuri. PART I... Gora the TeguWe fed a mixture of fish, eggs, and Mazuri to some of the animals and caught what we could on video. The first video is Gora the Tegu lizard. Did you know a bill passed that will ban the Tegu in Florida? We fought against it even though our mission is to rid the environment of invasive animals. However, if you outlaw the procession than how does one remove it from the environment without breaking the law? Added. if they are illegal to own how will one become passionate enough to save them if they do not spend time with them? The Tegu is a resilient hardy animal. They can make wonderful pets if you provide good husbandry,. Yet, even perfect caretaking will not calm an aggressive animal down much. There are some that are just bad. Gora was never bad, She just does not want to be handled. Over time she has grown to at least tolerate it. We also see the two new Macaws named Hunter and Rambo., They did not want to eat the eggs. You just have to keep watching this three-part series to see more of the birds, Fluffy, and other critters. He was revived after over one-half hour of CPR. He has continued to get stronger but will not eat unless you feed him. Putting Jo-Jo the Crow Away At The End of The DayWhen we let Jo-Jo fly, we know it comes at a price. The hope is he or she will find a mate and fly away to a happy and healthy life of its own. Other losses are plants that he eats, plants that he destroys in order to make a nest, and plants he ruins because he picks the pieces to gift to me. I will take the loss of plants before the loss of Jo. So far he does not go off far and does not look for a mate. Maybe because he loves Ken so much? I would have said Ken was the Turtle King but maybe he is the Crow King? At first, it would take half an hour to put Jo away. But then there were other crows and even the mockingbirds tried to harm him almost every time so we focused on short flight times. As he grew and the birds got used to him, he was able to fly for the entire day. Regardless of how long he flies, he often wants an incentive to go home. Notice I said wants and not needs. Fine, we used to bribe our kids into doing what we wanted too! It was a very thin line that we would walk but to us, it is easier to make them think they are doing what they want. It saves us time, Of course, we are working towards not needing the bribe. Just as we did with our own kids because eventually, they outgrew the cheap toy or book. Maturity I recon. How are you guys spending time during Quarantine? We are going through some videos and photos from our past. Redfoot Tortoise Makes A NestI dunno. Sometimes I criss-cross some tortoises names. When it comes to Turdie, Sheldon, and Leonard, sometimes they all have to be present for me to tell who is who. We are cleaning off a memory card and we found this footage from almost exactly one month ago. It is the perfect place to begin our day tomorrow. We hope you guys are staying safe. So far the facility is stocked on all essential food and other materials. There is nothing for us to worry about for a little while. But how much time do we have to worry about Turdies eggs because, in this video, Sheldon makes a test spot that we caught on film? However, Turdie went over after eating pumpkin and dug a nest to actually lay eggs but we could not catch that on film because it was so dark. Sheldon took hours and laid zero eggs while Turdie dug her nest and laid her eggs in all of about two hours. The last nest Turdie made she crushed all the eggs as they were being laid. While the nest Sheldon laid next to the last is hatching right now. The life of a tortoise is always about finding the best places to eat, live, and lay nests. How long does it take for Redfoot Tortoise eggs to hatch? We will talk about that tomorrow and we will check in on Toby, Harry, and so many other critters. #RedfootTortoise #TortoiseNesting #CrazyCrittersInc ~ Adopt ~ Breed ~ Rescue ~ Transport ~ Rehabilitate ~ Crazy Critters Inc. was established to provide non-domestic, non-releasable animals with a safe and permanent home. Greenhouse Update February 2020The last we were in the greenhouse, Ken was halfway finished with that row of handmade Waterland tubs. Now he is all the way done. NOT! You know how it goes... count that you need this many of this and really you need many more. Ken has to go get more supplies in order to add the next row. We are able to use the money that was raised during Bob's Birthday Fundraiser. The original one started out so well that he extended the goal. But we were not able to raise his additional goal. However, the funds is needed no matter how small or large. If we had raised the amount he had wanted, we would have been able to get the equipment we need to dig out that large slide pond. Slider turtles are the most surrendered reptile and we had a freeze on adoption because we had taken in so many in a short amount of time. Now we have plenty of room and if we are not able to have the new large pond finished when someone needs our services, we will be able to house them at the few facilities that we support. What do you think about the greenhouse so far? The turtles seem to be happy and content. #crazycrittersinc #reptilerescue #greenhouseupdate #turtleponds #turtlefarm ~ Adopt ~ Breed ~ Rescue ~ Transport ~ Rehabilitate ~ Crazy Critters Inc. was established to provide non-domestic, non-releasable animals with a safe and permanent home. Do It Yourself Water And Land Ponds For TurtlesWe are able to make changes to the greenhouse thanks to recent donations. This new row is specifically because of one from an anonymous supporter and friend. When finished there will be over 15 new habitats with almost 200 gallons of water. Added, we will be able to finish the Florida Softshell Turtle enclosure so that guys can stop getting out to walk freely around the greenhouse. We are excited about the next phase! New Indonesian Turtle For The Greenhouse PondWe recently made a drive after a new Indonesian turtle for the greenhouse. It is very important to have multiple males when it comes to turtle breeding. This new male pink-belly sideneck is especially pretty and colorful. Ken added misters in the greenhouse and you will be AMAZED at how it changes this week. New ponds, new lives, new future. Popeye The Sulcata Tortoise Is Getting StrongerPopeye is getting much stronger. Still not eating and drinking on his own, We are soaking =and hand feeding him each day or so. Only after stimulation does he eat. It is very important to keep his digestive system full of nutrients. Although the tortoise has the same digestive organs as most other vertebrates, it has adapted to cope extremely well in severe conditions where food and water conservation is at a premium. The tortoise can extract and assimilate moisture and nutrients from food items which to the human eye look completely “dried up” and would be of no nutritional benefit to most other living creatures. Tortoises can achieve this by means of a “hindgut system” which is effectively like having two digestive tracts, the latter of which reabsorbs any moisture from the waste products already produced by the former. Arid habitat tortoises can also effectively split up their urinary waste in the kidneys, storing valuable water in the bladder and only expelling the waste product in the form of insoluble uric acid crystals. The crystals have a similar look to toothpaste when passed. If this story is new to you, Popeye was found dead in one of the tortoise yards. There is no easy way to say it. He was dead for the first ten minutes of us doing CPR. But we did not give up and about a half-hour later, he was alive. We wrote a page on the website about turtle CPR because it does work! New Years Eve 2019Civilizations around the world have been celebrating the start of each new year for at least four millennia. Now, most New Year’s festivities begin on December 31 (New Year’s Eve), the last day of the Gregorian calendar, and continue into the early hours of January 1 (New Year’s Day). For Ken and I, we celebrate our nineteenth wedding anniversary. I chose that date so Ken would not forget. But when I was explaining how we were open today and closed tomorrow, he did not have the concept that our day was today. Regardless, the celebration goes on. We are also celebrating those who helped us most this last year. Companies who donated services or product. Without these, we would have accomplished far less. Those such as Litigation Solutions Beyers Fence Sealife Aquarium Wisetax Atkins Tree Care And lots of people too! We have a list of you guys on our website, the list is so long! Made progress on the winter barn and greenhouse. Built a new greenhouse. And created many projects that make the facility more self-sufficient. Babies to brag about. Life losses too. The good and the bad. The bad and the ugly. Through sickness and health. Our future is so bright and we are excited to create a place where people can go to get there herpes. Yes, I said herpes. Does anyone follow us from the old days when I used the old English form for herps? It is proper to spell it herpes, so it would spark conversation. Believe it or not, it connected us to so many awesome people. I guess I have always used social media to connect. We have helped over 300 people in their time of need. Many find us on social media. We are blessed to be able to use the same needy and wayward animals to create good honest content for the average exotic pet owner. Thank you once again for all your support in 2019. Raising Jo Jo The CrowI know we have not posted in a couple of days. But we are working on so many administrative duties that it was hard to create content. So we are sharing a video that we have made using short shots of the crow. Rearing Jo Jo has been awesome! This video is over the last few months. We have fledged him after we rescued him as a chick. As of now, he lives with the iguanas at night. Most days he free flies aroung the farm where his family comes to visit. For this reason, we thought he would fly off but I suppose he is socialized. It was fun getting him to this point. We had to show him how to eat and live. Eventually, he was able to go off on his own. But the Mocking Birds had another thing in mind. So it took a while for them to settle down. Then the hawk came. He can hold his own with him now too. Click to see the last few months that we have had raising this awesome bird...(Corvus brachyrhynchos) American crows are protected internationally by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Despite attempts by humans in some areas to drive away or eliminate these birds, they remain widespread and very common. The number of individual American crows is estimated by BirdLife International to be around 31,000,000. We want very much for Jo-Jo to go off to other crows. One day he may go off with his own family, which do come for daily visits and only live three Oak trees away. Until then, he enjoys his time with Ken. Guess How Many Eggs Turdie The Redfoot Tortoise Laid?Turdie laid eggs for the first time and we caught it on film. Redfoot tortoise breeding can occur at virtually any time of the year, but most breeders say it tends to take place either during or just after a rain. There are many reports that more than one male is needed for successful redfoot tortoise breeding. It seems that the presence of at least two males appears to stimulate the urge to reproduce. Others think only one male is necessary for successful redfood tortoise breeding. YouTubeI often say we when I talk about the facility but really Ken does all the hard work. But getting him to finish the greenhouse has taken lots of work... from me! Sometimes even warriors need a little push. We use wiggle wire and track. In fact, there is not a single staple in our greenhouses. This video shows some of this process. Click to see the start of this project on a page from our website...https://crazycrittersinc.com/building-a-greenhouse-nursery…/ We go to IBS in Apopka, but because we are Amazon Affiliates, we have links to products. We make a comission! So that is a win-win! We built this nursery in front of the facility in order to raise money for operation and construction costs. Feeding Wrath the Savannah Monitor Fresh CatfishWe fed Wrath the Savannah Monitor some fresh catfish then I begin to try to train him to go back to his cage after eating. We also check in on a few redfoots, and watch Gora gorge the last piece of fish as she goes into her hide spot. If you are interested in more info on the Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus), check out our website at www.crazycrittersinc.com. Search for the species of plant or animal that you are looking for information on. It is the first time that we have had to purchase leafy greens in over eight months. But we did not start the new plants in time, so we will be down to a few plants until later in the fall. This is ok with us because we do not feed that many fruit and vegetables. I would put it in this order when it comes to the tortoise diet... Grass Weeds Flowers Repcal and Mazuri commercial diet Hay Leafy Greens Cactus and succulents Produce Bone Carrion for some species We talk about this on our website so while you are searching for info on the Savannah Monitor, you can look at our diet recommendations. Hurricane Prep Ep 2... Dorian Not As ExpectedThan havens that storm did not come to Florida. I guess you could call it a drill. We were able to have everyone packed up and safe well before the storm was going to hit us. The event also helped us realize to expand our emergency plan to include leaving the state. It will be easy to pack everyone in tubs, put them in a trailer, and leave the state for a day or two if we ever had a huge huge storm. Man, that would be a lot of paperwork with the FWC. Because they do not want you to cross state lines with animals without permits. But we can get to that next storm. Or hopefully not because it is amazing what people have lost in this storm. Our hearts and prayers are with everyone who was affected by Dorian the Horrible. SO far everyone is back in their enclosures. SOrt of. You will have to check out our Instagram story to see some of the updates for today. Hurricane Dorian Comes To Crazy Critters Ep 1We have been preparing for days for Hurricane Dorian! Check out this video showing some of the ways. Will this storm ever get here? Will it create damage? We are not going to risk anything. We have put all the animals inappropriate housing for the storm. Leaving only the pond turtles and iguanas to enjoy the rain. Because they have a cover and are not exposed to full weather. We watched the video from Irma yesterday and noticed that the iguanas and turtles thrived in the thick rain. So that was one less thing to check off the list. One thing we did not forget was water. We have over one thousand gallons in case we need it due to power loss. We are on a well so we do not have to worry about contamination like city folk. We fed today. We did not think we would because of the storm. However. it moved so much slower than we thought so there were no issues with feeding some of that new Repcal food mixed with Mazuri. We sure appreciate the donation of the Recal from supporters who check out our Amazon Wishlist. Click to read why we use the Replica; brand. You will find links to purchase some for your pets too!...https://crazycrittersinc.com/?s=repcal Crazy Critters Inc. was established to provide non-domestic, non-releasable animals with a safe and permanent home. Never Get Enough Of Fluffy The Argus MonitorYou can never get enough of Fluffy. Recently we added some of the mulch that Atkins Tree Service has brought out to many enclosures. This was meant to help cool the animals and also help us keep the enclosures clean. Fluffy is not having it. But that is ok. We also add a larger water source. We often use concrete mixing tubs purchased through home improvement stores. We also feed Fluffy The Argus Monitor some chicken. He goes insane for it! We also see Jo-Jo The Crow and the iguanas Click to watch more! Why Crazy Critters Does Not RehomeKen tells why he does not want to rehome animals in this video. And I talk about the same, as well as lots of other rescue conversation. Crazy Critters Inc. was established to provide non-domestic, non-releasable animals with a safe and permanent home. The sanctuary has adopted animals including reptiles, birds, and assorted wildlife. Once brought to the facility, these exotic animals are housed in naturalistic settings. Allowing propagation that is used for conservation. Currently, this facility houses 16 species of animals listed on CITES. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is an international treaty to prevent species from becoming endangered or extinct because of international trade. Adding, the Crazy Critters organization has produced offspring from species currently found on the IUCN's Red List. How to get your exotic animal to eat Mazuri dietWe have a new redfoot tortoise named Daisey. She is too small to live outdoors. Which makes her our largest indoor tortoise. However, we take all indoor tortoises outdoors a few times per week. Ensuring the saftey of them has been made more difficult due to a hawk, The hawk is such a problem that he attacks Jo Jo the Crow when he is outside flying around. We are always with the babies when they are outdoors because we do not have the proper environment to leave them to nature. With the new tortoise, I noticed ours looking a little drab. Being under UVB/UVA bulbs and being misted daily with the water that comes from our well, which is on the hard side, caused them to look boring. A very tiny bit of vaseline will save the day. We had been asked on our website if there are any other formulas to use on these tortoises shells. And there is a long list. We have personally found a very think coat of petroleum-based jelly only once or twice a year is what works for us. We are a show you how we do it... not show you how to do it kind of place. We have found huge successes using the product which we learned about while watching Kamp Kenan, Click to see the video where we show you this procedure and share how we get new tortoises to eat commercial foods. Because it is so very important! Especially, indoor animals. Animal Behavior... Tortoises Eat Bone For CalciumTurtles seem to have high calcium requirements, studies from 2005 indicate that they require unusually high quantities for normal shell and skeletal development. Surprisingly, even desert environments often have extremely large snail populations, and it is not unusual to find literally hundreds of estivating snails per square meter, and thousands of particles of broken snail shell in the same area. Tortoises have been observed to seek these out, and to consume them. They provide a concentrated, readily absorbed source of this vital mineral.
