Tips for Furnishing a Small ApartmentFurnishing an apartment isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do - there’s lots to consider. There are budgets to contend with, lease agreements that can restrict your choice of alterations, and above all - small apartments are even more difficult to furnish thanks to cramped and awkward spaces and layouts. The plus side is, if you get creative, there are multiple ways to work around furnishing a small apartment and creating a stylish space that embodies your lifestyle, and your taste. In this post, we’re divulging tips for furnishing a small apartment with utility, adaptability, and style in mind. Dual Purpose Furniture Furnishing a small apartment should always be thought of in terms of multi-functionality, adaptability, utility and flexibility. Select furniture for your small apartment that compliments an overarching aesthetic you identify with, but also pieces that serve more than one purpose. This can mean a coffee table that doubles as a blanket box, a home for your vinyl record collection, or a miscellaneous storage bin. Or a bookshelf that serves as a room divider between a sleeping space and living quarters. Alternatively, you can also use furniture in your small apartment to make rooms multifunctional. Use your dining room table to double as a pop-up home office, or select a coffee table with adjustable height capability to turn your living room into a standing desk/pub-style table for dining or work. Dual purpose furniture can also mean investing in furniture that doubles as storage to help your space go further. There are many incredibly stylish beds that feature storage compartments underneath to store your clothing and/or linens, and nightstands and/or end tables that double as valuable storage space - which can even sometimes be used as impromptu console tables to round out the design of your living space. Sofa beds are fantastic ways to increase your ability to accommodate overnight guests, and coffee tables with drawers and under mount shelves are perfect for freeing up space on your bookshelves or in cupboard space. Add Furniture with Curves Small apartments tend to feature awkward layouts that are box-shaped, so using your furniture selections to add some curves to your space can keep things looking as though they’re in motion, adding to the perceived space you do have available to you. Consider opting for a round dining table or coffee table instead of a classic rectangular shape, and try an oval mirror in the bathroom to help make a stylish statement and get away from the rectangular box on your wall. Rather than standard side table lamps, try floor lamps to add some height to your space and throw in a more rounded appeal. If there’s any natural space-saving spots in your small apartment to salvage, think about turning your curved window space into a reading nook, or guest seating, and add a square-footage minded chair to transform the space into a quaint zone of the house geared towards relaxation. Layer your Decor Small spaces are, by default, lack dimension and depth; when there’s only one spot to look at, the eye settles immediately and this can assist in making a small space feel even more cramped. Layering your home decor is important to creating visual stimuli for the eye, and an help the apartment feel longer, and more engaging. Layering is all about creating deep and meaningful contrast between your space and your belongings - it’s much more than simply stock piling design elements on top of one another to create some dimension. The trick is to select pieces that have different - yet complementary materials, textures, and patterns - so if you choose a sleek, ultra modern sofa, garnish it with an eclectic area rug and/or patterned throw pillows to accent your selection and make it pop. Go the extra mile by working to select interesting pieces of art and wall hangings to complement your space, and integrate colour theory to help your selections feel as though they were a calculated, curated decision, rather than an effort to fill empty wall space. Add an Entryway Small apartments tend to just begin - and this can create harsh transition zones that are abrupt and sudden. If your apartment is so small that it doesn’t have a designated entryway space, you can easily create one by utilizing the power of furniture with a penchant for storage to build a suitable transition zone that also lends itself to maximizing your space. Using a bookshelf, armoire, or even a tall side table, outfit the bottom of the furniture with baskets to accommodate hats, mittens, scarves, and sunglasses, and consider adding a memo bar, key bowl, and a couple of hooks for coats and bags to add utility and style. If your shelving unit, or bookshelf has the room, use the leftover space to declutter another area of your apartment to free up other value space. Declutter Regularly Small apartments can be fickle when it comes to hiding a wealth of clutter. Aside from being overwhelming, clutter doesn’t lend itself well to optimized sightlines, open concept layouts, or the design values of a modern aesthetic, either. In short, clutter must go if you’re going to be able to furnish and live in your small apartment the way you’ve envisioned it in your head. Further, there are fewer places to store and hide clutter in a small apartment. Some of it - not all - has got to go. Twice per year, say at the onset of winter and spring, take stock of your belongings, what you’ve accumulated over the past six months and begin an objective purge. Prioritize what should be kept, and what needs to go - you’ll probably be surprised to find the amount of things you can stand to lose that have been clogging up your space and taking up much needed space. Organize and declutter one space at a time. First, tackle the areas that see the most traffic - typically, the living room and kitchen spaces. Next, tackle the bedroom, bathroom, and den. Seek to find an appropriate balance between strict interior design methodologies and a space that you can identify with and be proud to call your own. Furnishing a small apartment has many benefits: they feature lower rent, are typically closer to the heart of your city or town, and give off a warm charm that can’t be replicated in a large, cold space. Small apartments are also much cheaper to furnish, for the simple fact that less furniture is needed. Selecting the right pieces for your small apartment takes patience, some good background research, and some personal reflection to discover the furnishings and spatial identity you’re trying to portray. The good news is, it can be done - very well, we’ll add - if you take the time to evaluate what’s important to you, and find ways to make your vision a reality.

10 Best Milk Frothers to Make Café-Style Coffee at HomeStop splurging on fancy coffee art when you can make your delicious foamy coffee drink at home with no time. It happened more times than you can count on one hand. You fall in love with a particular drink from your coffee shop and want to mimic it at home, thinking it will save you some money. You make sure you get the right coffee, use the right mug, add in all the fancy additions, and it’s just not the same delicious cappuccino that your coffee shop has. Why is that? The reason behind it might be the milk the baristas use. Yes, baristas use the same milk that you buy in the supermarket, but it’s just not the same! There’s actually a hidden secret when it comes down to the milk that coffee shops all over use to give you that mouth-watering drink. So really what is that secret? They froth the milk that is going into your coffee drinks and give the coffee a little extra flavor and a creamy feel. Don’t worry, we’re here to give you the best items from Amazon that will help you froth your milk to give you that Café-Style Coffee at home! WHAT IS A MILK FROTHER? The goal of a milk frother is to add aerated bubbles into the milk to give it a creamy consistency. The bubbles make the milk become fluffy, adding an extra layer to your brew. That creamy goodness that often comes with those pretty brews from the coffee shop is the result of a milk frother, giving the milk some foam to play with. Frothed milk can be used to not only pour the milk into the coffee, but also to add an extra layer of milk to the brew on top. Some coffees only require coffee and milk, whereas others have an additional layer of milk on the brim, ready to give you a funny looking mustache. WHY USE A MILK FROTHER? WHAT DOES IT DO FOR THE COFFEE? You would think that making milk in a fancy method doesn’t really do much for the outcome of the coffee, but in reality it changes the flavor of the coffee for the better. When you pour regular milk into your coffee you are just giving the coffee a taste of milk, nothing more. When milk is frothed it creates bubbles in the milk, making the actual milk have multiple layers throughout. Your cup of coffee becomes more than just a simple coffee and milk mixture, you are giving the aromas of the two a chance to aerate into each other, creating more flavor. IS THERE ONLY ONE METHOD TO FROTH MILK? Frothing milk may seem difficult, but the good news is that you can froth your milk at home with many different methods! Frothing milk can be as simple as boiling milk, whisking/shaking, or as difficult as pumping milk manually. If doing things manually isn’t your cup of tea, frothed milk can be made with the help of machines (both handheld and automatic frothers). Each of these methods to froth milk can be done in as little as 5 minutes, so really you are not wasting time by frothing your milk. Whichever method you choose to froth your milk will give you that extra flavor in your coffee that you were searching for for so long. Save yourself the long lines in the morning and learn how to make your favorite coffee shop drink at home using instant coffee and frothed milk. 10 BEST MILK FROTHERS TO MAKE CAFÉ-STYLE COFFEE AT HOME Here are 10 methods to make your morning routine a little easier and give you the Café-Style Coffee that you need each morning by frothing your milk. Breville Milk Frother Makes smooth and silky milk, and creates a very creamy drink. Leaves room for powders and syrups to be added to the mix as well. Dishwasher safe, easy cleaning. Customers described this product as being “lovable,” “pricey but worth it,” and would “highly recommend” amongst their peers. Get it here 10. Manual Hand Pump One of the hardest methods, if not the hardest, to froth milk is to do this by hand. The reason for this method being so hard is because you are pumping the milk manually until it becomes frothed. The more you pump the milk, the more your hand tires out, making it harder for you to continue pumping the milk. Since milk is such a delicate substance, you can’t start pumping the milk and return later after you have taken a break. Another reason for this being the hardest method to froth milk is that it is time consuming. This method cannot be done as you are rushing to leave the house as there will not be enough time for you to actually froth it to the right level. Bellemain Hand Pump Milk Frother This hand pump milk frother will give you a long-lasting thick milk froth. Can pump up 14 oz of milk froth in a matter of seconds. No electricity is needed, so it can be portable (may be heavy, but you will have fresh milk froth). It is also dishwasher safe, which is important when dealing with milk. “Makes great foam,” “beautiful and functional,” “amazed at the froth,” and “perfect” were some of the reviews that were mentioned by customers. Explore Colorado || From East to West » Retrace These StepsHere’s a cliche; Colorado stole my heart. I have said for years and years that I would never live, nor visit Colorado because it was just too cold. However, in my current mission to visit all 50 states, Colorado was going to have to happen sooner or later, and google told me November was a great time to go (lies) so it happened sooner. Fact: Colorado was cold, but I had no time to think about the temperature because the entire state is just absolutely breath taking. EVERY route is the scenic route. Another fact: November was NOT the greatest time to visit. Why? Because nearly every site I wanted to visit was already closed for the season. My entire itinerary was shot to hell in less than 1 hour after my arrival in Denver. Yet another fact: The three days that I spent in Colorado were spent well, kept me on my toes, and I enjoyed every single second. Let’s start from the beginning.. My flight was set to depart at 8:30 pm on November 2nd. So not only do Maryland drivers give up as soon as a raindrop falls from the sky, but so do pilots. (Yes, it was for our safety, blah blah blah, I promise I wasn’t one of those assholes yelling at the flight attendants when our flight was cancelled). So yes, our flight was cancelled after sitting in a stationary airplane for 2 hours. Therefore, I was left with no choice but to scramble to find the next flight out of BWI to Denver. Tip #1: When your flight is cancelled unexpectedly, DO skip baggage claim and go straight to the check-in desk for assistance moving your flight. Your bag will still be there 3 hours later once you finally make it to the front of the line. Promise. (Even better) Tip #2: While you’re waiting in said line at the check-in desk for 3 hours, DO call your airline. Odds are (and fortunately in my case) you will be able to move your flight on the phone in just 5 minutes before the good ones are given away and it will be much easier. Stay in line until everything is confirmed just to be on the safe side. Day 1: So I was able to get on the 8:30 am flight the following day. Downside? 2 hour layover in Dallas and an arrival time of 2:00 pm. However, after speaking with other people who went through the line at the desk, I was much more fortunate. I landed in Denver, picked up my rental, and went to my BnB to drop off my things. I had planned to do a sunrise hike at Red Rocks, and then meander through Rocky Mountain National Park for the remainder of the day, but due to my later flight in, I cut my losses and settled for a sunset hike at Red Rocks instead. Still beautiful. My recommendation is the Trading Post trail. After my hike, I drove over to Boulder for dinner and some shopping. I asked a few locals for recommendations and was directed to a restaurant called Lazy Dog Sports Bar & Grill. To be honest, I’m not sure if it was my choice in food, but I wasn’t very impressed. I ordered a steak salad and some sort of fried shrimp wontons which were mediocre at best, and the bartender wasn’t incredibly friendly. If I had to do it again, I would have tried out a brewery called Fate, which was the second local recommendation. While I was here, I walked up and down Pearl Street for some time. There were plenty of unique little stores to shop in and so many talented street performers, and it felt like Christmas here. I loved it. Day 2: I had the luxury of spending Daylight Savings (the good one) in Colorado. So when I woke up to start Day 2 adventures, I was so well rested. My plans for the day were as follows: Two day hikes (Maroon Bells and Hanging Lake), I then planned to drive the summit road to Mt. Evans, and then spend my evening in Breckenridge. Here’s what ACTUALLY happened. Maroon Bells (Aspen) is about a 4 hour drive from Denver. If you are going to go to Colorado any time after summer, I highly recommend using the website cotrip.org. This will inform you of any road closures, summit closures, etc. and is kept very well up to date. I did not have the pleasure of knowing about this website until much later during Day 2. I started my drive to Maroon Bells. Taking the scenic route, I was surrounded by mountains and evergreens, and even stumbled upon a few rams. This route was AMAZING. The only downside, is that I made it about 3/4 of the way to Maroon Bells, when the road closed. So I sadly had to turn around and head back, super disappointed that I wasn’t able to see the Bells. Luckily, the Hanging Lake trail was on the way back, so I was able to make it here. During the month of November, since Hanging Lake trail traffic is much slower than normal, you are actually able to park at the trail head. So I parked, and started my hike up to the summit. The Hanging Lake Trail is 2.8 miles out and back with elevation gains of 1,204 feet. This sounds like cake, but the entire trail is uphill, and at altitudes of 7,000 feet. All Trails ranks this “moderate” but for someone with little training and who lives at an altitude of a mere 304 feet above sea level in day to day life, I struggled more than I would like to admit. In addition to this, it was snowing/sleeting the entire hike, and during times could not see because I was being pelted in the face with snow. HOWEVER, I would do it again and again and again. The hike itself was challenging for me, and was one of the first challenging hikes I have completed solo. Once I reached the lake, I was beaming with pride and also taken aback by just how rare it is to find an actual lake at the top of a mountain. I definitely plan to return during warmer season to see the lake in all its blue glory on a sunny day, but I’d do it again in the snow too. Pushing sun down, I quickly descended back to my car, and started my drive to Breckenridge, beaming with accomplishment, and starving, and here comes Colorado trip plot twist #594873980. During my 2 hour drive from Glenwood Springs to Breckenridge, the snow started to come down HARD, and soon I found myself approaching signs stating that the Vail pass was closed. The last exit I was able to take was Vail. After many detours, and police turn-arounds, I accepted my fate that I was going to be snowed in in the town of Vail. So, I booked an impromptu hotel room at Hotel Talisa. I have to say, if you are going to get snowed in in a random town in Colorado, let it be Vail. This place was awesome (despite off season). Once I’d checked in and dropped off the small amount of bags I had with me from my day hike, I went out and grabbed dinner at a bar called Bully Ranch. Not sure if it was because I was starving, but this was one of the best burgers I have ever had in my life. The bartender was incredibly accomodating and shared plenty of tips on where to go out and what to do during my time there. I even met another female traveling solo and we ended up grabbing drinks later in the night! Icing on the cake was the mountain view I had from my hotel room the next morning. Snowboarding trip to Vail is in my future plans for sure. Day 3: On my itinerary, Day 3 was supposed to be spent in southern Colorado (Manitou Springs, Pikes Peak, and the like). However, because I had a flight to catch, and a BnB to clean up I decided to just drive out to Breckenridge since I hadn’t made it there the day before. Have I mentioned that ALL OF THE ROUTES ARE SCENIC?! This was my view on my way from Vail to Breck. Breckenridge was all that I could have dreamed and more. Such a beautiful little town. I spent my day here weaving in and out of stores, shopping. Since I had forgotten my winter coat, it was a bit brisk, and I found a really awesome shop called Ridden. The guy who helped me here talked me out of buying an expensive winter coat I would have never worn again and informed me that I could rent one for the day for only $20! Lifesaver. If you ever find yourself here, go to a store called Joy of Sox. They have quirky socks, jewelry, and other souvenirs that you won’t find in all of the other t-shirt stores on the block. I stopped for lunch at a bar called Ollie’s. Supposedly they are known for their wings and burgers, and I can vouch for some really great wings, and if I ever find Bristol Brewing Co’s Beehive Honey Wheat beer anywhere in a store I am going to stock up for life, because it was the best beer I’ve had in a long time. While walking around, I kept tossing ideas back and forth in my head on what to do next. It came down to this; ice skating, or tattoo. So I got a tattoo. Rocky Mountain Tattoo Emporium. The dude who owns the place is super laid back, was able to give me exactly what I wanted in less than an hour, and for an incredibly reasonable price. It’s healed nicely, and I love it. So, if you’re a tat > ice skating person like myself, I recommend this place. I finished the afternoon by grabbing one more beer at Breckenridge Brewery (although, if I wasn’t pressed for time, I probably would have gone to Broken Compass). I had a vanilla porter here, and it wasn’t my favorite, but I’m interested to see what their seasonals are like other times of the year. All in all, I did not cross many things off of my itinerary, which only gives me that much more of a reason to return, and as soon as possible. (In fact, a snowboarding trip is in the works for February). Colorado impressed me, challenged me, and completely changed my mind in a matter of 72 hours. I honestly have to say that besides the scenery, the people here were just incredible and a totally different breed in the best way possible. So laid back, so friendly. (Or maybe they were just high). Either way, I felt at home, while miles away from real home. I learned a lot, I experienced so many new things, and I WILL be back because there is so much more that I want to do and see here. So with that, Colorado, we will meet again. Things have been slow lately, I am aware. I am in the midst of planning future trips and solidifying plans for these. But as of right now, there should be a Vermont trip, Michigan, and Colorado Part 2 in the works, as well as many more small day trips around the DMV region. Please keep your eyes peeled for updates. Chicken Tortilla SoupFall is soup season! Or at least it is in my house. It is the season of soup, pumpkin spice, football, and hoodies. Chicken tortilla soup is a great hearty yet fresh comfort food. I mean, who doesn’t love chicken, cheese, and avocado?! Lol. This post contains affiliate linksIt is super yummy on a cold night for dinner, and it can be eaten alone, as it is hearty enough. I use the slow cooker for mine, so I fix it and forget about it. I don’t know about you, but the easier it is, the better it is in my book. Ingredients: Two chicken breasts, boneless and skinless (cold/room temperature, not frozen) note, you can use frozen chicken, but the veggies will come out a bit more crunchy and not soft. Or one package chicken tenders works as well. These are my favorite chicken tenders to buy, but you can also do a package of two full size chicken breasts. 1 tomato, chopped½ an onion, chopped1 can diced green chilis1 teaspoon garlic salt3 teaspoons ancho chili powder1 teaspoon celery salt½ teaspoon white pepper2 cans chicken broth1 can vegetable broth2 bay leavesThe chicken seasoning is totally optional, but I frequently add a little in, just to enhance the chicken flavor. Two cans of chicken broth and one can of vegetable broth, plus the green chilies. I have also substituted fresh diced tomatoes for a can of them as well. If you have everything but that, a can works just fine. Combine all of these items in the slow cooker and cook on high 3-4 hours. I presume low would be 6-8 hours, although I have never done it on low. The chicken needs to reach 165 degrees internal temperature to be fully cooked. It is then safe to consume. Once the chicken is cooked, let it cool and then shred. Once it is shredded, return it to the slow cooker to heat back up, which will only take a few minutes. Adding the veggies into the slow cooker! It is the start of something amazing. Fully cooked chicken that is tender and juicy. Once it is cool, it is ready to be shredded! Garnish: Avocado, slicedMonterey Jack cheese, shredded My favorite cheese. Tillamook cheese is our go-to. Fresh colantroTortilla stripsI love the added flavor of these tortilla strips. If you don't have these, substituting a bag of basic tortilla chips that have been broken up works just fine as well. For the garnish, I never use a specific amount. It’s more a preference to taste. My husband likes copious amounts of cheese and only a small amount of avocado. I am the opposite, so whenever I am putting it together I make sure everybody has the amount they like. I also put the garnish into the bowl first, then ladle the soup on top of it. This will combine everything and make the cheese melt in the bowl. Another great way to use this recipe is to cook the chicken exactly as directed above, and then shred it for chicken tacos. I just omit the vegetable broth for that. Everything else is exactly the same. I love to do this and eat it in a taco salad bowl. I'm so hungry! I cook a box of Mexican rice to put in the bottom of the taco salad shell, add my cheese and then the chicken. The cheese melts between the rice and chicken, making it perfect. You can add refried beans in here at this point if desired as well. Then garnish it with whatever you want. I always make a homemade pico de gallo to go on top, with some sour cream, lettuce, and olives. This cooking method for chicken tacos is my favorite because the chicken is cooked in the deliciously flavorful broth. It is tender and easy to shred, and it doesn’t dry out. My husband prefers beef tacos, but shredded chicken is my personal favorite. The great thing about this soup recipe is that it uses everything I already keep in my pantry and fridge. The most I may have to go to the store and pick up is the cheese, and that is it. Which is easy because my husband can pick that up on his way home from work without going out of his way or forcing one of us to make a special trip. Because it is done in the slow cooker, the result is it can be left alone. The only prep work involves chopping a few veggies and opening a couple of cans from the cabinet. That is it. I enjoy the simplicity of this meal, yet it produces an amazing and hearty dish that my husband and I love. In fact we were talking earlier this afternoon about it being time to make some tortilla soup again. I hope you enjoy this recipe! It is frequently requested in my house. Primitive Technology: Tiled Roof HutI built this tiled roof hut in the bush using only primitive tools and materials. The tools I used have been made in my previous videos. It should be pointed out that I do not live in the wild and that this is just a hobby. It should be obvious to most that this is not a survival shelter but an experiment in primitive building technology. To cut and carve wood I used the celt stone axe and stone chisel made in this video. To carry water and make fire I used pots and fire sticks made in this video. Finally, to store fire wood and dry, unfired tiles, I used the wood shed built in this video. The wooden frame was built with a 2X2m floor plan and a 2m tall ridge line with 1m tall side walls. 6 posts were put into the ground 0.25 m deep. The 3 horizontal roof beams were attached to these using mortise and tenon joints carved with a stone chisel. The rest of the frame was lashed together with lawyer cane strips. The frame swayed a little when pushed so later triangular bracing was added to stop this. Also when the mud wall was built, it enveloped the posts and stopped them moving altogether. A small kiln was built of mud from the ground and a perforated floor of clay from the creek bank. It was only 25 cm internal diameter and 50 cm tall. Clay was dug, broken tiles (from previous batches) were crushed and added to it as grog and it was mixed thoroughly. This clay was pressed into rectangular moulds made from strips of lawyer cane to form tiles. Wood ash prevented the clay sticking to the stone. 20 tiles were fired at a time. 450 flat tiles and 15 curved ridge tiles were made with only a few breakages. 26 firings were done in all and the average firing took about 4 hours. The fired tiles were then hooked over the horizontal roof battens. An underfloor heating system was built into one side of the hut to act as a sitting/sleeping platform in cold weather. This was inspired by the Korean Ondol or “hot stone”. A trench was dug and covered with flat stones with a firebox at one end and a chimney at the other for draft. The flames travelled beneath the floor heating it. After firing it for a while the stones stay warm all night with heat conducted directly to the sleeping occupant and radiating into the room. The wall was made of clayey mud and stone. A stone footing was laid down and over this a wall of mud was built. To save on mud, stones were included into later wall courses. The mud was dug from a pit in front of the hut and left a large hole with a volume of about 2.5 cubic metres. The finished hut has a swinging door made of sticks. The inside is dark so I made a torch from tree resin. A broken tile with resin on it acts as a small lamp producing a lot of light and little smoke. The end product was a solid little hut, that should be fire and rot resistant. The whole project took 102 days but would have taken 66 days were it not for unseasonal rain. “The Pier Falls”: a short story by Mark HaddonClevedon Pier, Somerset. Photo: Rex Features 23 July 1970, the end of the afternoon. A cool breeze off the Channel, a mackerel sky overhead and, far out, a column of sunlight falling on to a trawler as if God had picked it out for some kind of blessing. The upper storeys of the Regency buildings along the front sit above a gaudy rank of coffee houses and fish bars and knick-knack shops with striped awnings selling 99s and dried seahorses in cellophane envelopes. The names of the hotels are writ large in neon and weatherproof paint. The Excelsior, the Camden, the Royal. The word Royal is missing an O. Gulls wheel and cry. Two thousand people saunter along the prom, some carrying towels and Tizer to the beach, others pausing to put a shilling in the telescope or to lean against a balustrade whose pistachio green paint has blistered and popped in a hundred years of salt air. A gull picks a wafer from a dropped ice cream and lifts into the wind. On the beach a portly woman hammers a windbreak into the sand with the heel of a shoe while a pair of freckled twins build a fort from sand and lolly sticks. The deckchair man is collecting rentals, doling out change from a leather pouch at his hip. “No deeper than your waist,” shouts a father. “Susan? No deeper than your waist.” The air on the pier is thick with the smell of engine grease and fried onions spooned on to hot dogs. The boys from the ticket booth ride shotgun on the rubber rims of the bumper cars, the contacts scraping and sparking on the live chicken wire nailed to the roof above their heads. A barrel organ plays Strauss waltzes on repeat. Nine minutes to five. Ozone and sea-sparkle and carnival licence. This is how it begins. A rivet fails, one of eight which clamp the joint between two weight-bearing girders on the western side of the pier. Five have sheared already in heavy January seas this year. There is a faint tremor underfoot as if a suitcase or a stepladder has been dropped somewhere nearby. No one takes any notice. There are now two rivets holding the tonnage previously supported by eight. In the aquarium down by the marina the dolphins turn in their blue prison. Twelve and a half minutes later another rivet snaps and a section of the pier drops by half an inch with a soft thump. People turn to look at one another. The same momentary reduction in weight you feel when a lift starts descending. But the pier is always moving in the wind and the tide, so everyone returns to eating their pineapple fritters and rolling coins into the shove-ha’penny. The noise, when it comes, is like the noise of a redwood being felled, wood and metal bending and splitting under pressure. Everyone looks at their feet, feeling the hum and judder of the struts. The noise stops and there is a moment of silence, as if the sea itself were holding its breath. Then, with a peal of biblical thunder, a wide semi-circle of walkway is hauled seaward by the weight of the broken girder underneath. A woman and three children standing at the rail drop instantly. Six more people are poured, scrabbling, down the half-crater of shattered wood into the sea. If you look through the black haystack of planks and beams you can see three figures thrashing in the dark water, a fourth floating face down and a fifth folded over a weedy beam. The rest are trapped underwater somewhere. Up on the pier a man hurls five lifebelts one after the other into the sea. Other holidaymakers drop their possessions as they flee so that the walkway is littered with bottles and sunglasses and cardboard cones of chips. A cocker spaniel runs in circles; trailing a blue lead. Two men are helping an elderly lady to her feet when yet more decking gives way beneath them. The shorter, bearded man grabs the claw foot of an iron bench and hangs on to the woman till a teenage boy is able to lean down and help them both up, but the taller man with the braces and the rolled-up shirtsleeves slides down the buckled planking till he is brought to a halt by a spike of broken rail which enters the small of his back. He wriggles like a fish. No one will go down to help him. The slope is too steep, the structure too untrustworthy. A father turns his daughter’s face away. The men running the big wheel are trying to empty each gondola in turn, but those stuck at the top of the ride are screaming and some of those lower down are unwilling to wait their turn and jump out, some twisting ankles, one breaking a wrist. On the beach everyone stands and stares at the hole punched into the familiar view. The coloured lights still flash. Faintly they can hear the “Emperor Waltz”. Five men tear off shoes and shirts and trousers and run into the surf. A line of seven ornamental belvederes runs down the centre of the pier. The western side of this spine is now impassable, so everyone seaward of the fall is squeezing through the bottleneck on the eastern side to reach the turnstiles, the promenade and safety. At the narrowest point people are starting to lose their footing and tumble so that those still upright must either walk on top of them or fall and be trampled in their turn. Sixty seconds gone, seven people dead, three survivors in the water. The man with the braces and the rolled-up sleeves is still alive but will not be for long. Eight people, three of them children, are being crushed by the crowd pouring over them. The belvedere itself is listing now, the metal structure being twisted so hard that the twenty-two glass windows explode one after the other. The pier manager has opened the service gate beside the turnstiles and escapees are fanning on to the pavement, dishevelled, bloody, wide-eyed. A small boy is being carried in the arms of his father. A teenage girl with a shattered femur sticking through the skin of her right leg is suspended between the shoulders of two men. The traffic along the promenade comes to a halt and a crowd lines the rails. The whole front is so quiet that everyone hears the noise this time. Two minutes and twenty seconds. The belvedere falls first, dragging the metal framework and the decking after it. Forty-seven people drop into a threshing machine of spars and beams. Only six of these people will survive, one of them a boy of six whose parents wrap themselves around him as they fall. The rubberised wires carrying power along the pier spark like fireworks as they are torn apart. All the lights go out on the end of the pier. The barrel organ wheezes to a halt. The men swimming out to help are lifted on the small tsunami generated by the mass of broken pier entering the water. It lifts and drops them as it passes and heads towards the beach where it sends everyone scurrying above the high water mark as if it were infected by the event which caused it. The arcade manager sits in his tiny office at the end of the pier, the dead receiver pressed to his ear. He is twenty-five. He has never even been to London. He has no idea what to do. The pilot of a single-engined Cessna 172-D looks down. He can’t believe what he is seeing. He banks and circles the pier to double-check before radioing Shoreham tower. The pier is now in two separate sections, the ragged end of one facing the ragged end of the other, forty-five tonnes of wood and metal knotted in the water between them. Some of those stranded on the seaward section stand at the edge, desperate to be seen and heard by anyone who might rescue them. Others hang back, trying to gauge the most dependable part of the structure. Three couples are trapped in the ghost train, listening to the noises outside, fearful that if they manage to get out they will find themselves watching the end of the world. On the landward section two people lie motionless on the decking and three others are too badly injured to move. A woman is shaking the body of her unconscious husband as if he has overslept and is late for work, while a man with tattooed forearms chases the petrified cocker spaniel in a large figure of eight. An elderly lady has had a fatal heart attack and remains seated on a bench, head tilted to one side as if she has dozed off and missed all the excitement. Faint sirens can be heard from the maze of the town. Two of the swimming men turn back, frightened that they will be struck by yet more of the pier collapsing, but the other three swim on into the archipelago of bodies and broken wood. The pier looms overhead, so much bigger than it has ever seemed from the beach or up there, so much darker, more malign. The men can hear the groan and crunch of girders still settling beneath them in the water. They find a terrified woman, two girls who turn out to be sisters and a man still wearing his spectacles who floats upright in the swell like a seal, only vaguely aware of his surroundings. The woman is hyperventilating and lashing out so wildly that the men wonder initially if she is caught on something under the surface. Only the sisters seem wholly compos mentis, so one of the rescuers escorts them back to the shore. The man wearing the spectacles asks what has happened then asks for the explanation to be repeated. The panicking woman won’t let anyone come near her so they have to tread water and let her expend all her energy and come perilously close to drowning before she is tractable. Just beyond the end of the pier five empty lifebelts are making their way out to sea. A young man on the promenade lifts his Leica and takes three photographs. Only when he reads the paper the following morning will he realise what is happening in these pictures. Immediately he will open the camera and yank the film out of its drum so that the images are burned away by the light. The air sea-rescue helicopter rises from its painted yellow circle on the runway at Shoreham, tilts into the prevailing wind and swings off the airfield. Five minutes. Fifty-eight dead. On the promenade a number of those who ran to safety have failed to find wives or husbands or children or parents. The manager has closed the gate but these people are weeping and shouting, trying to get back on to the pier. There are no police in attendance yet and he can see that keeping them here against their will may be as dangerous as letting them through and he doesn’t want this responsibility, so he reopens the gate and twelve of them pour past as if he has opened the doors to a January sale. The last of these is a girl of no more than eight. He grabs her collar. She fights and weeps at the end of his arm. The lifeboat is scrambled. On the eastern side of the pier a farmer from Bicester is trying to prise the six-year-old boy from between his parents. The boy can surely see that they are dead. Half his father’s head is missing. Or perhaps he can’t see this. He won’t let go of them and his grip is so tight that the man is afraid he will break the boy’s arm if he pulls any harder. He asks the boy what his name is but the boy won’t answer. The boy is in some private hell which he will never entirely leave. The farmer has no choice but to turn and swim, towing the three of them ashore. Only when he tries to stand will he realise that his ankle is broken. The tattooed man comes running down the pier clasping the cocker spaniel to his chest and when he runs through the gate on to the promenade the two of them are greeted by cheers and whoops from a crowd eager to celebrate some small good thing. Eight minutes. Fifty-nine dead. The helicopter appears in the sun-glare from the west. Everyone on the promenade hears the growing pulse of the rotors and turns to watch. None of the eleven people running on to the pier finds their missing relatives among the injured and unconscious so they stand near the ragged chasm and shout to the people on the other side. Have they seen an old lady in a green windcheater? A little girl with long, red hair? But the people on the far side are not interested in the lady in the windcheater and the girl with red hair because they are missing relatives of their own and they are terrified that the rest of the pier will collapse and the only thing they want to know is when they are going to be rescued. Two ambulances reach the seafront but the traffic is jammed so tight that the crews have to get out and run carrying stretchers and emergency bags. Five stay with the injured on the front, three continue on to the pier itself. Three policemen are trying to push the spectators back, some of whom resent being evicted from ringside seats. Nobody realises how many people have died. Everyone is thinking how they will tell the story to friends and family and workmates. On the pier a woman is slid sideways on to a spinal board. An elderly man with a broken collarbone is given morphine. Fourteen minutes. Sixty dead. On the promenade people are wondering if it was an IRA bomb. No one wants to believe that time and weather can be this dangerous, and it is exciting to think of oneself as a potential target. As the helicopter hovers over the end of the pier the people below fight to be the first to grab the winchman as he descends, but the downdraft batters them away from its epicentre and he alights in a circle of empty decking. He scoops a little girl from her mother’s arms and the sight of her being clipped into a harness shames them. As she is hoisted aloft they start gathering the other children, lining them up in order of age ready for the next lift. The swimmers come ashore – the sisters, the confused man, the struggling woman, their three rescuers. People rush forward with towels. It looks like a competition to see whose will be chosen. The struggling woman drops to her knees and digs her hands into the sand as if nothing and no one is going to separate her from solid ground ever again. The body of the old woman who had a heart attack is carried through the service gate under a white sheet into a sudden hush. There are still people on the front who think she is the only person who has died. The farmer towing the little boy and his dead parents hauls them into the shallows and feels one end of his broken tibia grinding against the other. It should hurt but he can feel nothing. He needs very badly to lie down. He rolls over into the water and looks at the clouds. People rush into the surf, then see his cargo and come to a halt. A young woman steps between them, a nurse from Southampton, where she works in the accident and emergency department. She has seen much worse. She is the only black person on the entire beach. She puts her hands flat on the boy’s shoulders and some of those watching wonder if she is using voodoo, but it is the steadiness of her voice which enables him to let go of his parents’ bodies and turn and be held by someone who is not frightened. The colour of her skin helps, too, the fact that she is so different from all these other people among whom he no longer belongs. Her name is Renée. They will stay in touch with one another for the next thirty years. The fourth child is lifted into the helicopter, then the fifth. The arcade manager emerges from his tiny office. He realises that if he is the last person winched to safety he will be able to say, “I stayed at my post.” The last couple escape from the ghost train, the husband kicking his way through the Frankenstein painted on the plywood sheeting of the façade. Twenty-five minutes. Sixty-one dead. The lifeboat arrives and the crew begin hauling people from the water. Some cannot stop talking. Some slither into the bottom of the boat like netted fish, sodden, glassy-eyed, oblivious. A boy of thirteen floats in a dark recess between two fallen girders. He refuses to come out and will not respond to their calls. A crew member jumps into the water but the boy retreats into the flooded forest of wreckage and they are forced to abandon him. The winch is stowed and the helicopter swings away with all the children on board. Many of them have left parents on the pier. Several don’t know if their parents are alive. For all of them the hammering roar is a comfort, filling their heads so completely that they are unable to entertain the terrifying thoughts that will return only when they are helped down on to the tarmac and run through the wind from the rotors towards the women from the St John Ambulance waiting for them outside the little terminal building. On the promenade a man in a dirty white apron squeezes through the crowd bearing hot dogs and sweet tea from the stand he runs beside the crazy golf. He returns with a second tray. Other boats are being drawn towards the pier, a Bristol motor cruiser, an aluminium launch with a Mercury outboard, two fibreglass Hornets. They idle just beyond the moraine of bodies and debris, unable either to help or to turn away. The boy of thirteen will not come out from the flooded forest because he knows that his sister is in there somewhere. He cannot find her. After thirty minutes he is hypothermic and feels desperately cold. Then, quite suddenly, he doesn’t feel cold at all. This doesn’t seem strange. Nothing seems strange any more. He wants to take his clothes off but hardly has the energy to stay afloat. Out there, only yards away, the world continues – sunshine, boats, a helicopter. But he feels safe in here. He is not thinking about his sister any more. He cannot remember having a sister. Only this deep need to be in the dark, to be contained, unseen, some primal circuit still alight on the dimming circuit-board of the brainstem. He sinks into the water five times, coughs and forces himself back to the surface, but with less effort each time and with a less distinct sense of what he has just avoided. The sixth time there is so little left of his mind that he lets it go as easily as if it were a book falling from his sleeping hand. A journalist from the Argus stands in a phonebox reading the shorthand he has scribbled on to four pages of a ringbound notebook. “Shortly before five in the afternoon . . .” One of the men trapped on the far end of the pier is terrified of flying. He is wearing an Arsenal T-shirt. The prospect of being lifted into the helicopter is many times worse than that of the structure collapsing beneath him. He knows that his only other choice is to jump from the pier. He is a strong swimmer but the drop to the water is sixty feet. The two possibilities toggle at increasing speed in his mind – fly, jump, fly, jump. He feels sick. His wife is airlifted in the second batch and in her absence his thoughts race until he realises that he will lose his mind and that this possibility is worse than flying or jumping. At which point he sees himself turn away from the crowd and run towards the railing. The sensation of watching himself from a distance is so strong that he wants to cry out to this foolish man to remove his shoes and trousers first. He remembers nothing of the jump itself, only the terrible surprise of waking underwater with no memory of where he is or why. He fights his way to the surface, refills his lungs several times and forces off his double-knotted shoes. He can see now that he is at the seaside. He can also see that he is floating in the shadow of some vast object. He turns and the wrecked pier looms over him. He remembers what has happened and turns again and swims hard. After a hundred yards he stops and turns for a third time and finds that the distance has turned the pier into a part of the view. He looks towards the town, the crowds, the blue flashing lights, the Camden, the Royal. He is unaware that people saw him jump and that he is now starring in his own brief episode in the afternoon’s greater drama. He feels victorious, unburdened. He swims steadily towards the beach where he is cheered ashore, wrapped in a red blanket and led to an ambulance. His wife will spend three hours thinking he is dead and will not forgive him for a long time. There is now no one left on the far end of the pier. The final person dies, deep inside the tangle of planks and girders. He is fifteen years old. He helped his father on the helter-skelter, collecting the mats and going up the ladder at the back when kids got scared or started a fight inside. He has been unconscious since he fell. The lifeboat returns and the crew retrieve fifteen bodies from the water. An hour and a half. Sixty-four dead. A Baptist minister offers the use of his church hall. Survivors are escorted by policemen and firemen over the road, up Hope Street, through a door beside Whelan’s Marine Stores and into a large warm room with fluorescent lighting and a parquet floor. The lid of a tea urn is rattling and two ladies are making sandwiches in the kitchenette. People slump on to chairs and on to the floor. They are no longer being observed. They are among people who understand now. Some weep openly, some sit and stare. Three children are unaccompanied, two boys and a girl. The parents of the younger boy have been airlifted to Shoreham. The other two children are now orphans. The girl saw her parents die and is inconsolable. The boy has concocted a story in which his parents fell into the sea and were picked up by a fishing boat, a story so detailed and told with such earnestness that the elderly woman to whom he is telling it doesn’t realise anything is wrong until he explains that they are now living in France. A policewoman moves quietly round the room, squatting beside each group in turn. “Are you missing anyone?” The lifeboat returns for a third time with a cargo of rope and orange buoys to keep away the curious and the ghoulish. Three hours and twenty minutes. Six men from the council works department erect shuttering around the pier entrance, big frames of two-by-four covered with sheets of chipboard. In the hospital most of the broken bones have been set and the girl with the shattered femur is having it pinned in surgery. A woman has had a splinter the size of a carving knife pulled from her chest. Evening comes. The front is unnaturally empty. No one wants to look at the pier any more. They are elsewhere eating scampi and baked Alaska, watching The Railway Children at the Coronet, or driving to neighbouring resorts for evening walks against a view that can be comfortably ignored. In spite of which the conversation keeps circling back, because at some time this week everyone has stood in a spot which is now empty air. Everyone can feel the thrilling shiver of the reaper passing close, dampened rapidly by the thought of those poor people. But was it a bomb? Was there a man on the front with a radio control and a trip-switch? Had they perhaps sat next to him? Nine people remain buried under the wreckage. The authorities know about eight of these. The ninth is a girl of fifteen who ran away from her home in Stockport six months ago. Her parents will never connect her to the event in the newspaper and will spend the rest of their lives waiting for her to come home. The orphaned boy and girl are driven to the house of a couple who will foster them for the local social services until their grandparents arrive tomorrow. The boy still believes his parents are living in France. The reunited families have gone. The hall is almost empty now. The only people who remain are those waiting for family members who will never come. None of the survivors sleeps well. They wake from dreams in which the floor beneath them vanishes. They wake from dreams of being trapped inside a cat’s cradle of iron and wood as the tide rises. 2am. Clear skies. The whole town so precise and blue that you could lean down and pick up that moored yacht between your thumb and forefinger. Only the surf moving and a single drunk shouting at the sea. The gaudy lights along the front have been turned off as a mark of respect, leaving a scattering of yellow windows and the hotel names in green and red neon. Excelsior, Camden, Royal. 3am. Mars just visible above the downs and a choppy stripe of moon across the sea. There is a dull boom as the far end of the pier’s landward half drops and twists like a monster shifting in its sleep. The TV crews arrive at 5am. They set up camp on the prom and outside the police station, smoking and telling jokes and drinking sweet tea from Thermos flasks. Dawn comes and for a brief period the wrecked pier is beautiful, but the epicentre of the town is already moving eastwards, down the prom towards the dolphinarium and the saltwater swimming pool. The pier is already becoming something you walk past. People get their holiday snaps back from the chemist. Some of the pictures contain the final images of family members who are now dead. They smile, they shade their eyes, they eat chips and hold outsize teddy bears. They have only minutes to live. In one freakish photograph a teenage boy is already falling downwards, his mouth wide open as if he were singing. Funerals are held and the legal wrangle begins. Paint peels, metal rusts. Herring gulls gather on the merry-go-rounds and the belvederes. Bulbs shatter, colours fade. Cormorants nest on the rotten decking. In high winds the gondolas on the big wheel sway and squeal. The ghost train becomes a roost for horseshoe and pipistrelle bats, the tangled beams and girders underwater become a home for conger eels and octopuses. Three years later a man walking his dog along the beach will find a sea-bleached skull washed up by a winter storm. It will be laid to rest with full funeral rites in a corner of the graveyard of St Bartholomew’s Church under a stone inscribed with the words, “The kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind.” Ten years after the disaster the pier is brought down in a series of controlled explosions and over many months the remains are lifted laboriously by a floating crane and towed to marine breakers in Southampton. No human remains are found. Mark Haddon is the author of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” and, most recently, “The Red House” (both Vintage, £7.99)

Want an Easy Coffee Solution for Your Office? Try Instant CoffeeCoffee keeps all employees motivated, awake and let them that much needed mental escape from the daily routine, but have you considered instant coffee as your office coffee method? Coffee is not only delicious and has many claimed health benefits, but also can benefit your business and its employees. It’s no secret that most businesses in the U.S. provide coffee for their workers, but sometimes struggle to maintain that perfect coffee station to fully satisfy its employees. Why would you have coffee in the office? 1. It increases employees productivity As an employer, you want to keep your employees motivated and productive. Coffee can actually help you achieve this. A 2013 study shows that consumption of moderate amounts of caffeine can increase the ability of your employees to concentrate and stay more focused. It also discovered that caffeine (which is found in coffee) increases our ability to solve problems requiring reasoning. 2. Creates a social interaction Not only that coffee breaks give your employees a reason to stand up and walk (which can help employees avoid leg pain, stiffness, cramps and other muscular problems), but also it creates a reason for social interaction. 3. Can reduce pain for desk workers You heard it right, you might be able to make your employees feel better while serving them their favorite cup of joe. The National Institute for Health found out that consuming caffeine before performing pain-inducing desk work can lower shoulder and back pain development versus people who do not consume caffeine. 4. It can improve your employees’ health and lifespan A single cup of coffee contains many antioxidants and nutrients, such as vitamin B2, B5, B3, Magnesium, and Potassium. For example, there is about 11% of the needed daily intake (RDI) of vitamin B3 in coffee. Vitamin B3 (Niacin) is helping functions in the digestive system, skin and nervous system. Moderate coffee consumption of three to four cups per day has been linked with longer lifespan. The medical journal, Circulation, published a research, which found out that coffee consumption is associated with an 8% to 15% reduction in the risk of premature death. Read more about coffee’s health benefits here. 5. Keeps your employees satisfied A recent survey found out that 50% of American workers spend about $1000 a year on coffee! This is why respondents also mentioned that they would like companies to invest in better food and drinks in the office, so they could cut down their personal expenses. Specifically, the survey shows that 22% of American workers would like their company to invest in better coffee in the office. Good office coffee and snacks will also help businesses to compete on good talent, as employees will consider it as part of the overall benefits. While large companies usually order their coffee from big food service providers, it can be a bit more tricky for small-to-medium size businesses. In a Financial Times article about coffee in the workplace, says Anya Marco, an adviser to the coffee industry, “Smaller offices can’t afford it (fancy coffee). Access to decent coffees is limited. If you have an office of 200 people, to put in a bean to cup machine is quite expensive.” Whether you just moved your company into a temporary office, can’t afford other coffee solutions or don’t have the room for a large coffee machine, quality instant coffee can be a great coffee solution for your employees and business. Instant coffee is a dissolvable coffee drink that is made from brewed coffee that was converted into powder or granules by extracting the liquid of the coffee bean. This can be done in two ways: spray drying or freeze drying. Instant coffee is easily dissolved when mixed with water to create a great cup of coffee, instantly. Contrary to some myths, instant coffee is made of pure coffee beans. Why quality instant coffee for your office? 1. It’s easy With instant coffee, you won’t need any complicated machines or equipment. If you choose to have one coffee station, simply have your quality instant coffee in a jar and some sugar and creamers on the side. Place an electric hot water dispenser on the same table, and you have the perfect coffee station. Buy this 45 cup coffee hot beverage dispenser for your office coffee station. Get it on Amazon. If you have a larger office space and you want to create several coffee stations, place smaller electric kettles on each station, with instant coffee and sugars on the side. If you serve single-serve instant coffee, your employees can even have a few packets in their drawer and make coffee when they want at their desk or office. All they will need is cold or hot water, which they can store in a simple water bottle or tumbler. 2. It’s the better business decision While buying freshly roasted coffee beans, grinding them on the spot and brewing coffee with a $2,000 coffee machine can be a fancy addition to your office, it might not always be the wisest business decision. When buying freshly roasted beans, your expiration date is usually within a month, sometimes even less if not stored correctly. When bought in bulk, you might end up tossing some of the extra unused coffee bags, which is a waste of your money. In addition, buying single-serve coffee capsules can get as expensive as $1 a cup. When you buy quality instant coffee bags in bulk and divide the per serving cost, you can get a delicious cup of coffee for as little as $0.4 per serving. In addition, if you also add up all the lost time for when your employees will be waiting for their coffee to brew, you better off offering them a quick and delicious coffee experience. Don’t get us wrong, we are all for social coffee breaks but with instant coffee you can be friendly and also make sure you are not late for an important meeting. 3. Your employees can make coffee, their own way When you offer your employees other coffee solutions, some might think their cup of joe is too strong or too light. When you serve quality instant coffee from a bag or a jar, each person can choose how many spoons of coffee she or he would like to pour into their mugs. They can also choose how much water to pour and if they want room for a creamer or not. Let your employees customize their coffee the way they want to. Buy this ceramic food storage jar with airtight seal bamboo lid for your office instant coffee. Get it on Amazon. 4. No cleanup and less waste As a business owner or office manager, you are also in charge of the cleanliness of your break rooms and coffee stations. With premium instant coffee, you will have less things to clean after your employees. Forget about the coffee waste left in the filter, brewed coffee pot dribbles, giant capsules boxes, etc. Instant coffee is made in your individual mug and fully dissolved in water, leaving no waste or mess. If you choose Waka Instant Coffee, you will also be donating 4% of each coffee purchase to clean water initiatives around the world, which will add you more credit with environment-conscious employees. 5. No more stale coffee Your employees deserve only the best coffee for their work environment, but everyone is busy and you can’t brew a fresh pot of coffee every 30 minutes. Most likely you are currently brewing coffee in your office only so often, and your employees can taste it. When the coffee is kept for a long time in the pot, it becomes stale and unpleasant to drink. When you offer your office employees delicious instant coffee, every cup of coffee is made fresh when mixed with water. Another great part about getting delicious instant coffee for your office, is that it ships directly to you. No more grocery store trips, just a few simple clicks online. Waka Instant Coffee is sold on this website, on Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.com so your at-work coffee experience couldn’t get any easier. Want to get wholesale pricing for your office instant coffee? Dangerous Foods Dogs Can and Can’t EatWe share everything with our dogs: our hearts, our homes, and our food. Surely there’s nothing wrong with sharing some of your favorite foods with your favorite pupper, right? Not necessarily. Many foods, such as fruits and vegetables, that humans digest with ease can wreak havoc in a dog’s system, causing severe health problems. Here’s just some of the foods to be aware of. As a side note, remember that just because your dog can eat these certain foods doesn’t necessarily mean it will be health beneficial. Only feed a small amount of what they can eat. We’ll start off with the good news and then the bad. Dogs CAN eat... Bread: Yes, dogs can eat bread. Small amounts of plain bread (no spices and definitely no raisins) won’t hurt your dog, but it also won’t provide any health benefits either. It has no nutritional value and can really pack on the carbohydrates and calories, just like in people. Homemade breads are a better option than store-bought, as bread from the grocery store typically contains unnecessary preservatives, but it’s best to avoid it altogether. Certain Nuts (Cashews & Peanuts): Yes, dogs can eat cashews and peanuts. Cashews are OK for dogs, but only a few at a time. A few cashews make a nice treat, but only if they’re unsalted. They’ve got calcium, magnesium, antioxidants, and proteins, but while these nuts contain less fat than others, too many can lead to weight gain and other fat-related conditions. Peanuts are packed with good fats and proteins that can benefit your dog. Just be sure to give peanuts in moderation, as you don’t want your dog taking in too much fat, which can lead to pancreas issues. Also, avoid salted peanuts. Cheese: Yes, dogs can eat cheese in small to moderate quantities. As long as your dog isn’t lactose intolerant, which is rare, but still possible in canines, cheese can be a great treat. Many kinds of cheese can be high in fat, so go for lower-fat varieties like cottage cheese or mozzarella. Coconut: Yes, coconut is OK for dogs. This funky fruit contains lauric acid, which can help combat bacteria and viruses. It can also help with bad breath and clearing up skin conditions like hot spots, flea allergies, and itchy skin. Coconut milk and coconut oil are safe for dogs too. Just be sure your dog doesn’t get its paws on the furry outside of the shell, which can get lodged in the throat. Corn: Yes, dogs can eat corn BUT NOT corn on the cob. Corn is one of the most common ingredients in most dog foods. However, the cob can be hard for a dog to digest and may cause an intestinal blockage. So if you’re sharing some corn, make sure it is off the cob. Eggs: Yes, dogs can eat eggs. Eggs are safe for dogs as long as they are fully cooked. Cooked eggs are a wonderful source of protein and can help an upset stomach. However, eating raw egg whites can contribute to biotin deficiency, so be sure to cook the eggs all the way through before giving them to your pet. Ham: Yes, dogs can eat ham. Ham is OK for dogs to eat, but certainly isn’t the healthiest for them. Ham is high in sodium and fat, so while sharing a small piece is all right, it shouldn’t be a continuous habit. Honey: Yes, dogs can eat honey. Honey is packed with countless nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, and antioxidants. Feeding dogs small amounts of honey can help with allergies because it introduces small amounts of pollen to their systems, building up immunity to allergens in your area. In addition to consuming honey, the sticky spread can also be used as a topical treatment for burns and superficial cuts. Meat (Pork & Turkey): Yes, dogs can eat pork and turkey however, any meat with excessive salt, seasonings, onions or garlic should NOT be fed. Pork is a highly digestible protein, packed with amino acids, and it contains more calories per pound than other meats. Pork also may be less likely to cause an allergic reaction in some pets compared to other proteins. Turkey is fine for dogs, but be sure to remove excess fat and skin from the meat. Don’t forget to check for bones; poultry bones can splinter during digestion, causing blockage or even tears in the intestines. Hooked Paw Me! Turkey Tendon Pet Treat has only ONE ingredient and NO additives or preservatives. They’re packed with protein and baked at low temperatures to keep its nutritional values. Peanut butter: Yes, peanut butter is OK for dogs. Peanut butter can be an excellent source of protein for dogs. It contains heart-healthy fats, vitamins B and E and niacin. Raw, unsalted peanut butter is the healthiest option. Read the label carefully to be sure the peanut butter does not contain xylitol, a sugar substitute that can be toxic to dogs. Popcorn: Yes, dogs can eat popcorn. Unsalted, unbuttered, air-popped popcorn is OK for your dog in moderation. It contains riboflavin and thiamine, both of which promote eye health and digestion, as well as small amounts of iron and protein. Be sure to pop the kernels all the way before giving them to your dog, as unpopped kernels could become a choking hazard. Seafood (Salmon, Sardines, Tuna, & Shrimp): Yes, dogs can eat fully cooked fish and shrimp, NEVER uncooked or undercooked, and only in moderations. Fish contains good fats and amino acids, giving your dog a nice health boost. Salmon is loaded with vitamins and protein. Sardines have soft, digestible bones for extra calcium. With the exception of sardines, be sure to pick out all the tiny bones, which can be tedious but is definitely necessary. Tuna is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which promotes heart and eye health. Hooked Paw Me! Tuna Pet Treats (Tuna Nuggets, Tuna Steak, Tuna Bone) have only ONE ingredient and NO additives or preservatives. They are packed with protein and baked at a low temperature to keep its nutritional value. As for canned tuna, it contains small amounts of mercury and sodium, which should be avoided in excess. A little bit of canned tuna and tuna juice here and there is fine, as long as it doesn’t contain any spices. Never feed your dog uncooked or undercooked fish, only fully cooked and cooled, and limit your dog’s fish intake to no more than twice a week. A few shrimps every now and then is fine for your dog, but only if they are fully cooked and the shell (including the tail, head, and legs) is removed completely. Shrimp are high in antioxidants, vitamin B-12, and phosphorus, but also low in fat, calories, and carbohydrates. Dogs CAN’T eat... Apple Seeds: No, dogs shouldn’t eat apple seeds. The casing of apple seeds is toxic to dogs as they contain a natural chemical (Amygdalin) that releases cyanide when digested. This is really only an issue if a large amount is eaten and the seed is chewed up by the dog, causing it to enter its bloodstream. To play it safe, be sure to core and seed apples before you feed them to your dog. Avocado: No, dogs shouldn’t eat avocados. Avocados contain persin, which can cause diarrhea, vomiting and heart congestion. The most dangerous part of an avocado is the pit because it is a choking hazard and it is full of persin. If you think your dog has ingested an avocado pit, call your vet asap. If your dog ate a small piece of avocado, it will probably be okay, but make sure you monitor your dog and call your vet for further care. Cat Food: No, dogs shouldn’t eat cat food. Cat food contains proteins and fats that target the diet of a cat, not a dog. The protein and fat levels in cat food are too high for your dog, and not healthy. Ingesting too much cat food can result in an upset stomach, obesity and pancreatitis. Certain Nuts (Almonds, Pecans, Walnuts, & Macadamia): No, dogs shouldn’t eat these nuts. Macadamia nuts, especially, are some of the MOST poisonous foods for dogs. It can cause vomiting, increased body temperature, inability to walk, and lethargy. Even worse, they can affect the nervous system. Almonds can block the esophagus or even tear the windpipe if not chewed completely. Salted almonds are especially dangerous because they can increase water retention, which is potentially fatal to dogs prone to heart disease. Chocolate: No, dogs should NEVER eat chocolate. This isn’t just an urban legend. Chocolate contains toxic substances called methylxanthines, which are stimulants that stop a dog’s metabolic process. Even just a little bit of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can cause diarrhea and vomiting. A large amount can cause seizures, irregular heart function, and even death. Do not have chocolate in an accessible location for your dog. If your dog does ingest chocolate, contact a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline as soon as possible. Cinnamon: No, dogs shouldn’t eat cinnamon. While cinnamon is not actually toxic to dogs, it’s probably best to avoid it. Cinnamon and its oils can irritate the inside of dogs’ mouths, making them uncomfortable and sick. It can lower a dog’s blood sugar too much and can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, increased, or decreased heart rate, and even liver disease. If they inhale it in powder form, cinnamon can cause difficulty breathing, coughing, and choking. Cooked Bones: No, dogs shouldn’t eat cooked bones. When it comes to bones, the danger is that cooked bones can easily splinter when chewed by your dog. Raw (uncooked) bones, however, are appropriate and suitable for both your dog’s nutrition and teeth. Corn on the Cob: No, dogs shouldn’t eat corn on the cob. As stated above, while small amounts of corn are safe for a dog to ingest, giving your dog an ear of corn can be dangerous. If your dog is determined enough (which let’s face it, most dogs are) they will eat the cob and all. The cob can be a choking hazard and can cause intestinal blockage. This could be fatal to your dog. Fat Trimmings: No, dogs shouldn’t eat fat trimmings. Cooked and uncooked fat trimmings can cause pancreatitis. Garlic: No, dogs shouldn’t eat garlic. Like onions, leeks, and chives, garlic is part of the Allium family, and it is five times more toxic to dogs than the rest of the Allium plants. Garlic can create anemia in dogs, causing side effects such as pale gums, elevated heart rate, weakness, and collapse. Poisoning from garlic and onions may have delayed symptoms, so if you think your dog may have eaten some, monitor him or her for a few days, not just right after consumption. Grapes & Raisins: No, dogs shouldn’t eat grapes and raisins. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure for dogs. Even a small amount can make a dog ill. Vomiting is an early symptom followed by depression and low energy. We’ve heard stories of dogs dying from only a handful of grapes, so do not feed your pup this potentially toxic food. Milk & Dairy Products: No, dogs shouldn’t eat milk and dairy products. While small doses aren’t going to be fatal to your dog, you could get some smelly farts and some nasty cases of diarrhea. Milk and dairy products can cause digestive problems as well as trigger food allergies. Salt & Sugar: No, dogs shouldn’t eat salt and/or sugar. Salt isn’t the healthiest thing for humans, it’s even less healthy for dogs. Too much of it can lead to sodium ion poisoning, which may result in vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, increased temperature, seizures and even death. Sugar, too much of it, can lead to dental issues, obesity and even diabetes. Xylitol: No, dogs shouldn’t eat xylitol products. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol found in gum, candy, baked goods, and other sugar-substituted items, is EXTREMELY toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure and even death for your pup. About Petique, Inc. How to Cut and Eat a Papaya | Papaya Taste TestIn this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to cut and eat a Papaya. I will also do a papaya taste test. I haven't had papaya in many years. Several years ago I lived in the Philippines for a couple of years and ate papaya over there. Papayas are native to Mexico and parts of northern South America, but they have been naturalized and are cultivated all over the world in tropical and subtropical areas. Places like Florida, Texas, Southern California, here in Arizona, Philippines, Thailand, Hawaii, to name a few. They are quite expensive here in the States 3 to 4 dollars for one small one. But they are quite tasty and full of nutrition. They kind of remind me of a mix between a cantaloupe and a mango taste-wise. Although the flesh is softer than those. They are super easy to eat too. So yummy! They can be used in fruit salads, eaten as is, in smoothies, with ice cream, with yogurt and granola, or whatever else you want with it. The seeds are edible but kind of bitter, they almost taste like pepper to me. But there are recipes that you can use the seeds in. How much to papayas cost where you live? Let me know in the comments. :) Buy my new mini-cookbook "All Things Chocolate" here on Etsy: https://etsy.me/30kADNb Or buy the Kindle version here on Amazon: https://amzn.to/31U2DYB Don't forget to subscribe to my channel, click that notification bell and check out my other videos! How to Eat Cactus Fruit (Prickly Pear) | Taste TestIn this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I show you how to prepare and eat cactus fruit also known as prickly pear, cactus pear, tuna fruit, opuntia, nopal. They come mainly in two different colors, purple and green. Cactus fruit or prickly pear is very nutritious, it is high in fiber, vitamin c, antioxidants, and other healthy vitamins and minerals. They are commonly eaten in Mexican and used in appetizers, main dishes, soups, jelly, etc. They are native to the Americas but have been introduced to other parts of the world and grown quite well there, places like Africa, Australia, Southern Spain, etc. We have them all over the place here in Arizona. Let me show you how to eat them and do a taste test. Let's get started! Things you will need: Cactus fruit (green or purple ones) Knife (that's it) The taste is somewhat sweet with crunchy hard seeds, which are edible or you can spit them out. The texture is kind of like a mix between a kiwi and a pear. Fortnite v8.50 Patch Notes - Avengers Endgame LTMEpic Games have released the latest Fortnite v8.50 patch notes, with it comes the Fortnite X Avengers LTM which Epic Games have been teasing on Twitter for the past few days. Down below are the full Fortnite v8.50 patch notes: BATTLE ROYALE WHAT’S NEW? Endgame – Limited Time Mode Join the battle for the Infinity Stones! Fight as Chitauri and Thanos or wield Avengers items in the Endgame LTM. LIMITED TIME MODE: ENDGAME Summary Thanos and his Chitauri invade the Battle Royale island, in search of the six Infinity Stones. Mode Details Endgame features a team of heroes fighting to stop Thanos and his Chitauri from claiming all six Infinity Stones. Both teams respawn when eliminated until the other side completes their objective. On one side is the Hero team. Heroes respawn when eliminated until the enemy team has found all six Infinity Stones. Heroes start with a treasure map that leads directly to a Mythic Avengers item. Other Avengers items can be found in Chests throughout the map. The goal for the Hero team is to destroy the Chitauri army and defeat Thanos. Team Thanos is comprised of Chitauri Invaders and Thanos himself. Chitauri Invaders start with a powerful laser rifle, an anti-structure grenade attack, and a jetpack that lets them briefly leap high into the air. The first Chitauri to recover an Infinity stone will be transformed into Thanos. Thanos has a powerful punch, a destructive beam attack, and the ability to jump high into the air and then smash anything in his way when he comes back down. Each time an Infinity Stone is claimed, Thanos’ abilities grow more powerful and the Chitauri gain health. Reality Stone (Red) = Heath & Shields doubled (1000->2000) Soul Stone (Orange) = Siphon activated (grants Thanos shields only) Mind Stone (Yellow) = Jump height doubled Space Stone (Blue) = Ground Pound AOE size tripled, damage x6 Time Stone (Green) = Big knockback added to each hit, damage x3 Power Stone (Purple) = Laser damage x6 If Thanos is eliminated from the match, another Chitauri will become him after a short wait (unless Thanos is the last one standing). If Thanos & the Chitauri find all six Infinity Stones, Heroes will no longer be able to respawn. The goal for Thanos and his army is to find the stones and then eliminate the remaining heroes. WEAPONS + ITEMS Bug Fixes & Improvements The Hold to Swap functionality is now confirmed upon releasing the Use button rather than when initially pressing it. This should help with the issue of accidentally swapping. If a player is eliminated by fall damage while inside a vehicle, the player that last damaged that vehicle will receive the credit for that elimination. Re-enabled hit markers to be server-side authoritative instead of client-side. This will help prevent instances where players see hit markers but no damage. Players that were Rebooted into Rifts were teleporting into the sky but would not enter skydiving mode. Vehicles weren’t getting impulsed away from the Reboot Van. Collision for the Reboot Van was not affecting some vehicles, allowing them to hide inside of the Reboot Van. The yellow “invulnerability” effect wasn’t appearing on players who were revived by the Reboot Van. The Reboot Card was still playing its spawn sound even if the player disconnected. Dropping inventory items while in vehicles with weapons is now blocked to prevent various camera issues. Traps were occasionally being placed in the middle of a tile rather than against a wall when using Builder Pro. When exiting vehicles, the equip animation will now always play before weapons can be fired. This will prevent the issue where players would occasionally see themselves fire right after exiting a vehicle before the server had time to register the shot. The elimination feed text will no longer display the “eliminated by ally” message if an ally interrupts a player reboot animation. Fall damage was being taken when using a Jetpack (in supported Limited Time Modes) after being launched from the Pirate Cannon. Players were not able to negate fall damage using a Flintlock Pistol while crouching. Players couldn’t see the nameplates of party member’s Reboot Cards in the UI. Players would not drop a Reboot Card if they were eliminated after confirming a Reboot but before their teammate actually spawned. GAMEPLAY Bug Fixes & Improvements We’ve resolved an issue that was preventing the correct amount of Survival XP from being granted after games and have gifted XP to players as compensation. You’ll receive this compensation via the Gifting system. COMPETITIVE New Tournament – April 27 & 28: Fortnite World Cup Online Open Week 3 ($1,000,000 total prize pool!) Top performers in each server region will qualify to the Fortnite World Cup Finals in New York City. Full Fortnite World Cup details and official rules can be found here: https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/competitive/events/world-cup Solo Game Mode Participation in this event requires both players to have reached Champion League in Arena. Region Lock is in effect – players may only participate in the qualifier for a single server region each week of the Online Opens. The server region of the first match entered for that weekend’s tournament will be the one the player will be locked into for that entire weekend. Format: April 27 – Round One: All Eligible Players. April 28 – Round Two: Top 3000 Players from Round One. Streaming Replays – Currently only available on PC & Mac Added tournament Match History, which can be viewed by selecting a player on the leaderboards. Replays can be viewed from each match that player has played. Added the ability to spectate live matches during tournaments by selecting a player on the leaderboards. Note: Match must have been running for 10 minutes for live replay to be available. Added the ability to view a specific match by game session ID using the “View Streaming Replay” button in the Replay Browser. Arena & Tournaments will now record profile stats to Solo/Duo/Squad categories rather than as an LTM. Bug Fixes & Improvements Players in Arena were incorrectly seeing themselves demoted to a lower division after losing Hype. This was strictly a visual issue and all Hype values and division unlocks are once again being displayed correctly. Tournament posters in-game were incorrectly showing certain events as starting in ‘2 Days’. Tournament posters and the Arena Panel were not loading properly on mobile devices. PERFORMANCE Bug Fixes & Improvements Resolved a cause of significant hitching during skydiving. and during late game combat. ART + ANIMATION We’ve added a unique animation for petting the dog and other Pets. AUDIO Added Sound Visualizer without Spatialization (panning) of sounds in-game. By introducing this mode, if you are a hearing-impaired player, then you will now be able to play the game with audio and the visualizer turned on simultaneously! Drop in and give us your feedback about these changes either in-game or on our social channels to help us continue to make improvements for the future! Bug Fixes & Improvements Various gameplay sounds (gunshots, walking, reloading) will no longer retrigger at incorrect/random times. This was causing “ghost” sounds to be heard when nothing was causing the actual sound effect. Fixed an issue that would cause certain things to not have looping audio when they should. REPLAY Bug Fixes & Improvements When healing with foraged Banana or Apples, the full visual effects weren’t playing when viewed in replays. See AlsoDying Light 2's Well-Known Narrative Designer is Leaving The SceneMOBILE The reactive effects were not working properly for the Marshmello Outfit. MSAA anti-aliasing enabled on P30 Pro, Mate 20, Mate 20X. The interact button now has context-sensitive icons. You can now move while the map is open by providing input on the left side of the screen. Bug Fixes & Improvements Made improvements to stability and to resolve some crashes. Made performance improvements on the iPad Mini 4 and Air 2. The movement joystick wasn’t appearing on the HUD for certain devices. Push notifications were not being sent after updates finished downloading. Blocked players on player’s friend lists were not appearing as ‘Blocked’. The fire button and right fire-stick would not function after anchoring the Baller grapple with tap to fire. The right fire-stick was not allowing camera movement while in the Baller. The Baller grapple was not releasing on the first tap. Players could get stuck in an infinite fire loop after exiting the Baller while it was anchored with the grapple. Double tapping was required to detach the Baller’s grapple when using tap to fire. There were visual issues on the Back Button in the menus. Voice Chat icons from players set to “sit out” were not appearing. Ammo boxes weren’t opening. The Confirm and Cancel buttons in Squad Management were difficult to touch/interact with. The Option menus were closing the unapplied changes was closing the entire menu instead of just the popup prompt. Menu icons could be removed from the HUD Layout Tool. Vehicle boost icons were appearing different between viewing them in a match vs in the HUD Layout Tool screen. The Score Tracking widget can now be removed from the Mobile HUD Score Tracking widget can now be removed from Mobile HUD It was difficult to see character and weapon animations while using the Boom Bow. The Map widget was setting its anchors inappropriately when moved in the HUD layout tool, making some attached game mode UI push the Map widget off the screen. You may need to reset the Map widget in the HUD Layout Tool to resolve this issue. CREATIVE WHAT’S NEW? Game Rounds Play a round! New game settings are now available, such as the ability to add rounds! Find our more in the Gameplay section below. Phase Mode Phase mode allows you to toggle collision with objects and the world On & Off. When you’re in Phase mode you can pass freely through all terrain and bring objects with you. Pirate Ship Prefab Avast, ye mateys! Become the captain of your very own Pirate Ship! Imagine and create your own Pirate Cove using this new prefab. ISLANDS Added two new featured Island portals to the Creative and Playground Hub. Reduced player Island portals from 8 to 6 in the Creative Hub. Bug Fixes & Improvements Material resources were not being reset when returning to the Hub. Infinite material resources were not being toggled properly when Island permissions changed. GAMEPLAY New Rounds game settings You can now add rounds to any game. Everything will be reset to the original pre-game state when starting a new round. Each round uses the end game Score and Winner display settings to announce a winner, and also displays a round scoreboard. The number of wins per team or player is displayed on the scoreboard. In the future, we will be adding an overall winner for the game display. The Total Rounds setting sets the number of rounds from 1 to 100. Updated options for Eliminations, Creature Eliminations, Objectives to Win, and Collect Items to: Win to be Off, 1-10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200, 500, or 1000. Bug Fixes & Improvements Players could cause damage to each other after a game had ended. Games were taking unexpectedly long times to start on Islands with Creative Spawners. Lobby music would play on a continuous loop after winning a game. Players in a party that was set to “Sit Out” would go into the game if the party leader joined a game in progress. CREATIVE TOOLS + PHONE Added Phase mode: While flying, you can now activate Phase mode to pass through objects and terrain! Phasing can be very useful for quickly navigating your Island while editing. To activate or deactivate Phase mode: On the keyboard, press the N key(this can be reassigned in Settings). On controllers, hold down the Left Thumbstick. On mobile devices, you can assign a new Phase button to your HUD which allows you to toggle Phase. Your Phase setting will be remembered, so you’ll continue to phase after you stop and start flying. Bug Fixes & Improvements Fruit consumable could not be selected by the Phone. The pillars in the Ice Castle Set could not be placed after being rotated on a changed axis. Canceling a cut of the rings from the Rings Gallery would cause that ring to be unaffected by the Phone. The Ice Castle Balcony was unable to be placed correctly. DEVICES Added new options to Stormwing Spawner to configure whether objects are destroyed when they’re hit: Boosted Health Threshold – While boosting straight into an object with this amount of health or less, it will be destroyed immediately (Default: Everything) Direct Hit Health Threshold – After a head-on collision into an object, if it has this amount of health or less it will be destroyed (Default: 300) Breakthrough Health Threshold – Anything the Stormwing bumps with this amount of health or less will be destroyed. (Default: 0) Options (Battle Royale, 0, 150, 300, 450, 600 or Everything) Battle Royale – Use the current balance as defined by Battle Royale (This will change over time based on the Stormwing’s current state in Battle Royale) 0 – 600 – The current health the object must be below for it to be destroyed. Everything – There is no threshold, everything will be destroyed. New options for Objective Device Updated health bar look with a selectable identifying letter. The scoreboard was not appearing when choosing a narrow time difference between “Winner Display Time” and “Score Display Time”. Sometimes displayed the same player’s name multiple times. Player’s row was not consistently being highlighted. Placement placards would always show “1st” when on teams. Various team settings caused scoreboard columns to be offset. Descriptions for schematic rewards were not showing when viewed in the mission rewards section on the map. Some Schematic/Heroes had text and numbers cut off their descriptions. Armory slot items were showing unrelated tabs when previewing it from the shop. The Launch button would appear enabled but would be unusable when trying to launch an SSD mission. Collection Book Hero rewards were not displaying properly after claiming a random Hero reward. Collection Book completion pages were not updating when unslotting items or adding new items to a page. The wood harvesting UI was getting stuck on player screens when rejoining a mission or re-enabling the HUD. Players joining a game in progress would not appear in the team list HUD. AUDIO Updated the audio for the Noble Launcher charging up. Added audio when players are cycling through traps. Bug Fixes & Improvements Sounds were missing on Danishing Hare Ken’s martial arts animations. GENERAL We’ve reworked the Ready / Not Ready logic in several places. This should prevent/resolve instances of players involuntarily being marked as Not Ready. Only the Party Leader will be marked as Not Ready when the following events occur: A party member leaves A party member joins The selected playlist is changed Everyone but the Party Leader will remain Ready after returning to the lobby from match. Added some additional text to the Play Button area to show which party members still need to ready up. How to Eat a Pomegranate | Pomegranate Taste TestIn this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to eat a pomegranate. I will also do a pomegranate taste test. Where do pomegranates grow? Pomegranates originated in the Iran to Northern India region many centuries ago, but have long since been cultivated in many other parts of the world. They are grown here in Arizona and in California and other States. Pomegranates are among the healthiest foods and fruits that you can eat. High essential vitamins and other healthy properties. But they can take a few minutes to prepare, you can't just eat into one like you can an apple. And don't get the juice on your clothes! The seeds are super juicy and tasty. People juice pomegranates as well as use the seeds in salads and other things. So yummy! How to Eat a Pomegranate? To eat a pomegranate all you need to do is cut around the top where the step was and then pull it off. Then cut along the ridges of the pomegranate. Then open it up and dump the seeds into a bowl of water. Have you had a pomegranate before? What did you think? How much did it cost? YouTube95 percent of baby foods tested contain toxic metals, new report says Dangerous Foods You Should Absolutely Never Give Your Baby. Foods To Be Avoided For The Babies There's a strong chance your baby's food contains traces of toxic heavy metals, including arsenic and lead, according to a new study. The research, commissioned by Healthy Babies Bright Futures (HBBF) and outlined in a report released Thursday, tested 168 baby foods for the presence of four heavy metals: arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium. They found that 95 percent of the baby foods were contaminated by at least one of the heavy metals, and one in four of the baby foods tested contained all four of the heavy metals. Only nine of the 168 baby foods tested were not found to contain traces of any of the four metals. Among the highest-risk foods are fruit juices, as well as rice-based products, including puff snacks and rice cereals, since rice is particularly effective at absorbing arsenic, a common pesticide, as it grows. Four of seven infant rice cereals tested contained inorganic arsenic, which is the more toxic form of the metal, in levels exceeding the Food and Drug Administration’s proposed limit of 100 parts per billion. Sweet potatoes and carrots are also big culprits since they are root crops. The foods tested spanned 61 brands and 13 types of food, including infant formula, teething biscuits, cereals and fruit juices. They were primarily selected by parents who volunteered with HBBF's partner organizations. The parents were asked to buy foods from the most prevalent baby food brands at their local stores. Additional foods were purchased online. Among the metals, lead was the worst offender, appearing in 94 percent of the baby foods tested. Cadmium and arsenic followed, showing up in approximately three-quarters of the baby foods tested, and mercury was the least common, found in just under one-third of the baby foods tested. All of the metals except mercury are known or probable human carcinogens. They are naturally occurring elements and their frequent use in pesticides in the last century means they still remain in the soil and find their way into groundwater even decades after some of them have been banned from use in pesticides. The four metals are neurotoxic, posing serious threats to healthy childhood brain development. Exposure to these heavy metals can result in lower IQs, for example. A data analysis also commissioned by HBBF showed that American children ages 0 to 24 months have already lost more than 11 million IQ points from exposure to arsenic and lead in food. Fifteen foods account for more than half of this IQ loss, with rice-based foods alone making up 20 percent of it. One way to reduce these levels of heavy metal exposure is to push for the FDA to set regulations, Brody says. For nearly 90 percent of the baby foods tested, the FDA has not issued guidance or set standards for the maximum safe limit of heavy metals, according to the report. In the meantime, Brody says families don't have to wait to offer their kids safer alternatives to foods at high risk of toxic metal contamination. Parents can opt for rice-free snacks and non-rice cereals, such as oatmeals and multi-grain cereals, to cut back on one source of heavy metal exposure. Ensuring kids eat a variety of vegetables beyond the common sweet potato and carrot purees also helps, and swapping teething biscuits for frozen bananas can make a difference. HBBF says alternatives like these have 80 percent lower levels of the metals, on average, than the riskier foods. As your baby grows, they will be eager to sample food from your plate ,and you'll be eager to introduce some variety to baibe's diet. But not all foods are safe for your child. Some pose a choking hazard, and a few aren't good for your baby's developing digestive system. Foods to avoid for Birth to 4 to 6 months All food and beverages has to be avoid except breast milk or formula. Mostly doctors recommends feeding your baby only breast milk or formula for the first four to six months. Foods to avoid for 6 to 12 months Cow's milk and soy milk: Stick with breast milk or formula until your child's first birthday,Why? Your baby can't digest the proteins in cow's milk and soy milk during her first year, and these beverages contain minerals in amounts that can damage her kidneys. Honey: It may harbor potentially deadly spores and cause infant botulism. Symptoms include constipation, weakness, poor muscle tone, and difficulty swallowing. infoWORLD Web: http://www.infoworld-en.blogspot.com Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/c/infoWORLD-en Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/infoworld.us Twitter: http://www.bit.ly/2VGdx1N Instagram: http://www.bit.ly/2H0W0hl

How to sell items quickly on PoshmarkHow to Sell Quickly on Poshmark When I started selling on Poshmark several years ago, I was lucky in that I made several sales shortly after starting my closet. My things sold quickly, so I didn’t experience the struggle of trying to make sales. I think part of the reason was that there were fewer sellers at the time, so my items didn’t have as much competition. Cue to the present and things are different. Poshmark has grown and it’s much more competitive to make sales. I get emails and see postings from people every day asking how to sell quickly on Poshmark. When you’re struggling to get sales, you might get the impression that Poshmark doesn’t work. I recently received an email from a frustrated seller. She said that it seemed like there were lots of sellers on the app but that no one was buying anything. It may seem that way as a frustrated seller, but believe me, Poshmark works and people are buying goods on there. PM has 4 million users and is growing. There are PM users out there absolutely rocking sales and making a killing off it. Some even make full-time incomes if you can believe it. No doubt, they work very hard at it, as much as anyone would work at a regular full-time job. So how to do they sell well on PM? What’s the secret? Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. This means that I may receive compensation when you click on a product link or purchase an item linked on this site. Click here for details. *** If you don’t have a Poshmark account, you can receive a free $5 bonus when you sign up with my code SFGIRL2015. On Mercari, you can get $10 when you sign up with the code JENMHM. The amount may vary by promotion. 1 | Sell what people want Poshmark isn’t much different from a brick-and-mortar store in this respect. If you walked into a department store selling unpopular brands and clothes that are out of style, you’d walk out of there without purchasing anything. The same is true when people view a closet on PM. It’s hard to sell things that people don’t want. What sells quickly on Poshmark are things that are in demand. These items are on trend right now. When cold-shoulder tops were popular, top sellers stocked them because they knew those tops would move fast. Other recent trends this past summer included fruit print clothing and cheeky swimsuits. I saw those items all over retail shops and online. Not only are sellers offering popular items, but the items cost a lot at retail. A new pair of Lululemon leggings can easily cost $98 or more. That’s pricey for someone on a budget, so that person comes to Poshmark to find it for less. Poshmark is increasingly targeting male buyers and sellers. More and more men are using the app to both buy and sell. In fact, men’s sales are growing faster than women’s sales. They want clothes too! If you’re able to find in-demand men’s clothes that they want to buy, you’ve opened yourself up to a whole new audience. As a side note, I know there are people out there who like out-of-style and odd-ball clothing. You might find a buyer for your item, but it will likely sit for a while waiting for that buyer to come along. How Do You Find Out What People Want? One easy way to find out what to sell is to read the Poshmark Blog. PM does trend reports (sometimes live) and regular posts on what’s trending. This summer, Poshmark shared some of the most in-demand men’s items. These were t-shirts, swim trunks, sunglasses, and loafers. Brands included Supreme, RVCA, Chubbies, Ray-Ban, Persol, Cole Haan, and Sperry. PM wants you to be a successful seller. That’s more money in your pocket and their pocket. You’ll continue selling on Poshmark and have good vibes about the company while the company keeps running. There are several other ways to find out what people want. Identify top selling brands (e.g., Kate Spade and Free People). I look at what’s selling at popular stores and online shops. Look at what celebrities are wearing. Look at what trends and styles are popular. Sell for the current season and upcoming season (e.g., holiday dresses). 2 | Use keywords in listings This sounds easy enough but not everyone does it. I love using Google when I search for information online. Google uses its algorithm to find me the best results. But the writers of the resulting articles have also done a good job in using keywords so that their posts will show up in Google searches, also known as search engine optimization (SEO). The same is true for Poshmark listings. The best listings have the brand name and style name in their titles. It pays to list the style name if you can find it, even if it takes a few more minutes of your time to search for it. Potential buyers who know they want “Lululemon Run Inspire crops” will search for that term. They may get deterred searching using the term “Lululemon pants” because they know there will be hundreds or thousands of results, many of them not what they want to buy. Using keywords in listings will help your listings come up in Google searches too. Have you ever searched for clothing online and a Poshmark listing comes up? That seller did a good job of using keywords in their listing so that Google was able to find it. I’ve sold a few things to people by using the right keywords in my listing titles and descriptions. These people weren’t even Poshmark users, but Google showed them my listing and they made a temporary account in order to buy the item. I like to put keywords and describe items in the description boxes too. Give the viewer what you can to make them more confident buying from you. By the way, I created this handout on 200+ top-selling brands to know to help you make more sales. Click on the button below to grab your copy! 3 | Increase your number of listings for sale Poshmark is all about numbers: shares, profit, dropping prices, shipping costs, followers, and more. In buying and selling, there’s no getting around dealing with numbers. When it comes to closet size, more listings is better for sales. Poshmark recommends having at least 10 available listings in your closet. I think 10 is far too few. If you walk into a random store with 10 clothing items, how likely are you to buy one of them? If you walk into a store with 100 or more items that are trendy and in-demand, you’re more likely to find something you want to buy. That’s why it’s worth it to spend time growing your closet. Top sellers have hundreds and even thousands of listings available for sale. They may sell men’s clothes too to tap into a growing market on Poshmark. 4 | Price items smartly Pricing isn’t a one-and-done deal. I wish it were as easy as listing all shirts for $10 and all pants for $20, but it’s not. You can sell quickly on Poshmark by underpricing everything. I’ve seen closets completely sold out because items were priced low. Your items will sell, but you’re leaving money on the table. Most sellers don’t want to underprice their items, particularly if they’re selling as a full-time business or side hustle. You can price your items smartly by looking at how much that item has sold for in past sales. What’s the market price? Then offer your item at that price plus extra to provide wiggle room for negotiation. I like to price things 20-30% higher. You might see that a sweater you’re looking to sell previously sold for roughly $50. I would list the item for $60-$65. If you’re looking for an even quicker sale, you might want to list your item below the market price. Say you find everyone else selling a Kate Spade purse for $100. You might list yours at $90. If you have potential buyers negotiating with you, that’s a good thing. That means they want what you have and hopefully are willing to pay within the ballpark of your initial price. You’re not leaving money on the table. You’re not pricing so high that people are ignoring your listing. You’re getting people to bite at your listing. You’ll get lowball offers on PM too. That’s the nature of a second-hand marketplace where people want incredible deals. I continue to negotiate with potential buyers to see if I can bring their initial offer up to an amount I’m happy about. 5 | Professional looking listings I don’t want to scare anyone off by saying that you have to be a professional photographer with a fancy camera and all the fixings of a photo studio. You can take great pictures at home with good lighting and your cell phone. Some people do beautiful flatlays where the item is folded and styled nicely. A blouse that’s for sale might be shown with some pants and boots or jewelry to give the viewer an idea of how to wear it. If that’s too much, you can show just the one item that’s for sale either in a flatlay, hanging it, or putting it on a body form. Take your pictures where there is enough natural light to accurately show your item. If you don’t have that option, editing your photos is another good option. Great lighting and clear pictures showing each aspect of an item will get you far. This is something I’m working to improve myself. I have a place with suboptimal space and lighting that makes it hard to take pictures. I will run pictures through a photo editing app like SnapSeed to brighten them. From time to time, I retake pictures of items that aren’t selling well. This gives them a new look and gets new people to look at them. I’ve had several items sell better once relisted with better pictures. Here’s one item I relisted with a better background and heels as props. Another aspect of professional looking listings is to give enough detail for a potential buyer to be confident about the item to purchase it (or at least negotiate the price) on the spot. If they have to ask questions about the item, they may shy away from the sale after some time has passed or decide not to ask you at all. Those professional listings describe the condition of an item, which is so important when you’re selling something used. They list flaws if there are any, sizing, and special details. What would you want to know about this item to convince you to buy it? Even better, what you would be upset that the seller didn’t disclose about this item before selling it to you? If you are looking for some items to make business life easier, these are 24 must-haves for the online reseller. I use several of these to help me list, store, and ship items as professionally as I can. 6 | Be an active member of the PM community Sorry if you thought selling was passive. It is if you want it to be, but you’re not likely to make lots of sales or quick sales. If you want to maximize your potential for sales, you have to be active on Poshmark. What does that involve? At least a few things: Sharing your own items. You can share your items to your followers, to individual people, and to online parties. Top sellers will tell you that they share their own items thousands of times a month. Sharing other users’ items. You don’t have to share other people’s items, but it’s a key part of being a good Posher. Respond to questions ASAP. This lets potential buyers know you’re active on the app and serious about selling. There are other ways to be active on Poshmark. These include welcoming new users, hosting Poshmark parties, and commenting on other people’s listings. In my opinion, none of these are as important as the three things above. If you’re already on Poshmark, you probably know that sharing listings can be time-consuming. I don’t advocate working on Poshmark so much that your quality of life suffers for it. Hours upon hours of time on Poshmark (or any side hustle) can cause you undue stress, loss of sleep, and unhappiness. But sharing items is a key way to promote your items, thereby giving them a better chance of being seen and sold. Full-time resellers will tell you that they spend lots of time on their business. They may spend 60-80 hours a week on the Poshmark app as well as other aspects of selling online such as sourcing items, cleaning items, photographing and listing items, packaging sales, and shipping sales. While you don’t have to pull 60- to 80-hour weeks, know that being an active part of the Poshmark community will help you make faster sales than if you’re not. 7 | Use promotional features Selling on Poshmark is rarely a list-it-and-leave-it deal. Top sellers make more and faster sales by taking advantage of promotional features provided through Poshmark or on their own. Poshmark offers several promotional features to help you make sales. Bundling is when a potential buyer puts together items from your closet into a virtual bundle. The benefit of this is that you can negotiate the total price of the bundle instead of each item individually. The buyer also saves on shipping costs by having items packaged together in one box for mailing. Offer to likers is when you offer people who have “liked” your item a special discounted price. Instead of waiting for potential buyers to come to you with their offers, you can offer them an item at a discounted price and cover part of their shipping cost. Closet Clear Out is a promotion in which you lower the price of an item by at least 10% off the historic lowest price given that the item is $10 or above and the item will automatically receive discounted shipping. The cost of shipping varies by is frequently $4.99 versus $6.79. While $1.50 isn’t much, it feels like a deal. The discount is only good for a limited time, which gives a sense of urgency to the sale. Once in a while I come across a surprise – a great closet with lots of in-demand items at reasonable prices but few sales. I remember one woman’s closet with lots of Lilly Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines clothing. I was surprised that some of her listings were still available for sale given how popular those brands are and her relatively low prices. I wasn’t surprised anymore after I scrolled to the top of her profile and saw a low number of shares. She wasn’t very active on PM so her listings got lost in the sea of all the other listings out there. I hear and see people asking all the time how to make sales on Poshmark. Some people are trying to get their first sale. Others are trying to get on a roll. Still, others are asking how to just sell quickly. No one wants to wait around to make a sale. I don’t either. Despite talk of secrets tricks and tactics, I think selling on Poshmark isn’t a matter of secrets but a matter of smart hustling. Selling on Poshmark is rarely a case of set it and forget it. It’s a combination of all of the above factors to help you make the sales you want. What has sold quickly for you on Poshmark? What do you think are key factors in selling quickly?
