Parents rape teenage son to make him "earn" nice things: Joseph & Jennifer CarterBefore I begin, I want to offer the standard "reader discretion is advised" warning because this story is very graphic. The defendants in the case have been identified in the media by their real names. Jason was the pseudonym given to the victim in court documents. Jason was a normal 12-year-old boy. He went to school. He had friends. He had a love of music. He wanted to go to high school at the area's alternative institute of technology. He lived with his siblings and his parents, 40-year-old Joseph and 36-year-old Jennifer Carter, in Delran, New Jersey. Delran is a small suburb of Camden located in between Philadelphia and New Jersey's capital of Trenton. One day in the summer of 2010 dad Joseph asked his son if he ever thought about what it's like to be intimate with a woman. Jason was at the age when every boy is interested in sex, but he wasn't expecting such a question from his dad. Later that night, Joseph woke Jason up and blindfolded him, telling him he had a surprise. He led him to the living room and had him lay down on the floor, where a woman Jason had never met had oral sex and intercourse with the boy who was still in middle school. Over the next few months, this happened three more times. One day in 2011, Joseph asked Jason if he ever thought about what it would be like to be with a man. Jason said no. Joseph then forced Jason to perform oral sex on him in the first of what Joseph called "practice sessions." Jason had to earn everything he wanted, like a cell phone by "practicing." Every time Jason wanted something cool, Joseph would tell him that he hadn't practiced enough. By Jason's recollection, this happened at least 15 times. Later that year Christmas rolled around and Jason wanted an electric guitar. In order to "earn" that gift, Jason had to endure even worse abuse. Joseph began forcing Jason to have anal sex. It didn't stop there. On a different occasion Jason was forced to take a shower with Jennifer. Jason was also instructed to manually stimulate his mother before she performed oral sex on both him and his dad. Jennifer later admitted to police that at the time she didn't want to participate in the abuse, but she had a broken tooth and Joseph said he'd pay to fix it if she participated. She agreed. In February 2012, Jason broke down. He felt that he couldn't hold it in anymore and he confided in his aunt. His aunt replied "We need to stop this now" and took him to the local police department. There he described to a detective what he had been suffering through for the last year and a half. Hoping to elicit a confession, police set up a taped phone conversation between Jason and his father. Joseph didn't directly confess to the abuse, but he did say this to his son:"I'll tell you something, you can tell anybody you want but honestly, your mom's secrets are gonna come out of the closet too. And by the time you get done you'll lose both of us. Do you want that?" Later that night detectives picked Joseph up at his home and brought him in for an interview. After waiving his Miranda rights, Joseph initially denied the abuse and said he never laid a hand on his son. Later he said that the sex was all Jason's idea. "He wanted to try oral. It lasted for a couple minutes. He said he was all right with it. I said "Okay." We just let it go at that point." Joseph went on to claim that Jason had initiated the anal sex as well. Having heard enough, detectives arrested Joseph and Jennifer Carter on the spot. They were charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and third-degree promoting prostitution. Joseph made bail while Jennifer sat in jail awaiting trial. Their parental rights to all three of their children were quickly terminated. Four years later in April 2016 Joseph Carter went to trial. After a two-week trial, the jury found Joseph Carter guilty on two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, three counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and the lesser-included offense of third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact. After the trial prosecutors shocked the community with another revelation: between 1993 and 1995, the Carters had engaged in sex acts with another minor similar in age to Jason. Joseph pleaded guilty to that charge after he had already been convicted of abusing his son. At sentencing the judge did not mince words. The defendant used his title as a father to satisfy his own sick, perverted sexual desires and he did so in the most unimaginable and perverted way possible. I can think of no more humiliating and reprehensible act than to engage in this conduct and thereby commit the ultimate betrayal and breach of trust that is typically inherent in the father-son relationship. Joseph Carter was sentenced to 39 years in prison. He is currently incarcerated at the New Jersey State Penitentiary in Trenton, New Jersey and is scheduled to be released on February 13, 2041, when he will be almost 71 years old. Jennifer Carter took a plea deal in which she pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child in exchange for her testimony against her husband. She was sentenced to 5-15 years in prison. With credit for the more than four years she had already served in jail, Jennifer Carter was released on parole on August 10, 2017. This story made me cry. Hard. As a male sexual abuse survivor myself, this one hit home. I pray that Jason can have a normal life, but if my experience is any indication there's a good chance his so-called "father" destroyed his emotional health for the rest of his life. I'm a Christian and I believe in a forgiving god. But I truly hope those pieces of human garbage spend eternity burning in hell. And for the record, I feel like I need to take a shower. https://law.justia.com/cases/new-jersey/appellate-division-unpublished/2018/a0667-16.html https://www.burlingtoncountytimes.com/article/20160504/NEWS/305049684 http://www.burlingtoncountytimes.com/article/20160701/news/307019866
